Who gives a frak?

I do not doubt that the surging "Hope and Change" message will be apparent in the final episodes. The creators tackled terrorism from the beginning, in the miniseries. And if you don't believe me, listen to the commentary to hear Michael Rymer discussing Al Qaeda and the relevancy of the Cylons doing their best to annihilate Human way of life. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be a positive commentary on current events at the thyme; it was meant to "question" authority. (the artist mantra) And ultimately to open up a dialogue to comment on the Bush administration policy on the GWOT. I never listened to the commentary until 3 seasons into BSG, and I am sure glad I didn't because it would have clouded my judgment. Now it only clouds my judgment on what ground-breaking television they are/were trying to create.

Eric and I are watching Babylon 5. We are in the middle of season 3. It is as relevant as a mother frakker. War always is. But the difference is B5 was written in the mid-90's, pre-9/11.

So, in essence, the article is narcissistic gôu pì from someone who sounds like he/she never listened to a BSG podcast or commentary, or maybe never even watched all the episodes, for that matter. The plan was to tell a story in 4 seasons. Ronald Moore does not mince words, and he does what he wants. If it "magically relates" to the Obama Era, which logically cannot  "happen," why not instead of asking the question, "Is it relevant?", just tell us HOW it is relevant. (Just checked to see who wrote this. The editor. Like we thought the EDITOR of io9.com was going to NOT gloat over the new administration.)

Then again, she did post this gem of a poll: http://io9.com/5133779/the-final-cylon-should-have-been---

Oh, you're let down?! Sad little kings on sad little hills. Bored now.

B5 was one of those shows Ann wanted to watch so I kinda watched it with her, halfheartedly, didn't pay too much attention the first year or so. Horrid acting. But then the show kicked into high gear and all the stuff I thought was stupid and pointless the first year and half or so suddenly made sense and was wonderful foreshadowing. Killer show. I wish JMS would have had been able to pace the show as he originally planned. The events of the fourth season was supposed to be the fourth and fifth season. Damn good show.

It's really a shame that more shows aren't written like B5 was.   For the uninitiated:   Most of B5's five seasons were written in advance of filming and mostly by one man. This allowed for huge story arcs, very interesting character development and enigmas which may be answered two or three seasons later.

Contrast this with Lost, where the writers seem to say, "Hey, wouldn't it be cool to throw an ice cream truck in the middle of the island?" and proceed to do so, deus ex machina.  BSG, too, suffers from the "river" style of scriptwriting ("We'll just let the series flow where we feel it should go").  Like just another character in their play, you're supposed to forget that Roslyn was never supposed to make it to see Earth; that Baltar was entrusted with the same nuclear device which blew up 1/3 of the fleet; that Cylons began as mechanical Centurions like the old series and not as the modern-day hotties; that Baltar in no way could have survived the nuclear shockwave which hit his house; Or that Cylon's backs glow red during sex ...

JMS's theory was that too many shows suffered from expensive budgets due to lack of planning and from this the idea of writing the full series was sprung.  I think that generally it was for the better for consistency, too.

Oh, and the whole "Is BSG relevant" thing?  Eye-rolling ignorance.
If anything, writers should be prolifically working up stories about a reincarnated Elmer Gantry.

But then, that wouldn't fit into the meme, would it?

But they did have Baltar talking to a new Centurion. Now all we need is Boxey and it'll be complete.

Boxey was in the miniseries but disappeared into the rest of the unwashed masses during the series proper:

BTW, that was Boxey's dad who met the first Six on the space station that the Cylons blew to smithereens in the opening minutes of the miniseries.

I know kids are annoying - but I sorta wish they'd popped Boxey into a few eps .
