Mine was either Where the Red Fern Grows or Call of the Wild. Can't remember which was first.
And I'm thinking you weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

  Too long ago for me. :)  I started reading when I was 3 years old maybe earlier and became a very
precocious reader. That first chapter could have one of many that day. :)
