Here be spoilers.Details on DEXTER Season 5The serial-killer drama Dexter is one of Showtime's biggest earners of both ratings and critics' praise. As of the show's many devoted fans, and given the totally game-changing finale of Season 4, I'm counting the days until it returns. And for all you other Dexter junkies out there currently bottoming out in the midst of the long slog toward September, we've got the fix. EW's The Ausiello Files blog has an interview with Dexter executive Sara Colleton in which she drops a few interesting details on what we can expect to see in Season 5. If you don't like spoilers, you're going to want to steer clear. Otherwise, hit the jump for a taste of what's in store for your favorite sardonic sociopath and his Dark Passenger.
From The Ausiello Files:
Season 5 will pick up right where season 4 left off.
Quote"We have spent the last month sitting around, talking and really debating how best to deal with the aftermath of [Rita's death]. We uniformly decided that we don't want to jump ahead. We need to see Dexter go through the process that we'd all have to go through if such a horrible thing had happened to us. We need to see him doing everything from the big emotional things like grieving the loss, to the mundane things like arranging a funeral, getting the kids dressed, and all the other things that are usually done for men because their wives or mothers do them. They have no idea how to handle all of these things. As we saw, Rita was really the caretaker of their baby. It would be cheating the audience of their catharsis to not see Dexter go through that mourning period and see how it affects him or to not see him dealing with the blowback of what he essentially caused. So we will not jump to Harrison as a 5 year old yet."
Season 5 may not feature a Trinity-esque villain.Quote"John is a tough act to follow. If there was ever a year that we could take a step back from the Big Bad formula and go deeper into Dexter and his psychology, this would be that year. That said, Dexter has a dark passenger that won't go away no matter how much he yearns to be normal. That rears up and needs to be dealt with. He may even dive deeper after this traumatic loss of Rita. We are working on a way that feels original and fresh and unique to what he has just gone through. It cannot be the way it has been before. In [Season 1], he was terrified of any kind of intimacy because intimacy equaled being discovered. Then he slowly realized he had a need to be known and he set up a family and tried the best he could to balance it all. And now, he sees what being known brings him and he had it ripped out from underneath him suddenly and that will have some affect on him."
Dexter will remain single... for now.Quote"Anything is possible, but I don't think Dexter will be in the mood for dating or love anytime soon. That's not even on our radar right now. He very much loved Rita and they were in a good place right before she was killed so that wound will take quite some time to heal."
Colleton also reiterates that star Michael C. is in full remission and back in good overall health after his recent bout with Hodgkin's lymphoma, which he was battling while filming last season. Congratulations to him on that.
As for the show, seeing exactly how Dexter picks up the pieces in the aftermath of finding his wife floating in a tub of her own blood is what has me most intrigued about next season, and I'm glad we'll enter into the experience from the beginning. I'm also happy they're probably going to be moving away from the "Big Bad"; I'm getting a bit tired of the whole Dexter vs. the big boss serial killer formula. Anyone care to venture a few guesses on what else we'll see next season? How will Dexter balance the responsibilities of single fatherhood with his need to chop people up into itty bitty pieces? Will investigating Rita's murder put Deb on the path to discovering her brother's dark hobby?

Eek! There are spoilers in there. I better warn my wife (who is in love with the show, but just finished season 3).

The end of the season 3 had some foreshadowing...
the blood from Dexter's cast dripping down the back of Rita's wedding dress while they were dancing. Quite prophetic.
I can't wait to see Season 4. Somebody might be getting Showtime in time for a recap and Season 5...
Season 4 is my favorite.

'Dexter' Review: You Will Love This Serial Killer
by Lorie Byrd
It is not often that a promo for a television show causes spine-tingling chills. In fact, I don't think one has ever affected me that way – until this summer, that is. The show is Dexter and it has had me captivated since the day I first discovered it during the television writers' strike of 2007-08. To fully explain what caused the chills might require providing spoilers to those who have not seen the first four seasons, but I'll do my best to stop short of that. (Do not follow the links to the promo or the longer trailer unless you have already seen Season 4 in its entirety.)
Dexter is an hour-long drama following the adventures of serial killer, Dexter Morgan. The fifth season of the series premieres on Showtime September 26. If you are not already watching, I highly recommend you purchase or rent (or stream or download or whatever you do) the first four seasons of the series before watching Season Five. Without seeing the development of the characters and storyline in seasons 1-4 you will never fully appreciate the show.
I discovered Dexter a few years ago on CBS when the lack of original content resulting from the writers' strike sent the networks to reality shows and cable for available programming. CBS "borrowed" the first season of Dexter from their sister network, Showtime. Before seeing the show, I was curious, but skeptical that viewers could identify with a serial killer. And maybe they don't actually identify with Dexter, but if they are like me, they fell in the love with the character anyway.
The premise of the show, which is based on the character in a series of books by Jeff Lindsay, is that Miami police department blood spatter analyst Dexter Morgan is a serial killer who lives by a strict code of conduct. The "code" was instilled in him by his adopted father, Harry, a cop who recognized the psychopathic homicidal tendencies in Dexter and used the code as a way to protect society and his son at the same time. The code requires that Dexter only kill murderers and that he does enough due diligence before killing them to be absolutely sure of their guilt. In that respect his occupation sure does help since he has access to police and court files and computer records.
Tension is created as Dexter not only tracks and kills his prey, including one main antagonist each season, but as he tries to live as a normal human being. Dexter does what many psychopaths do – he attempts to mimic the emotions he sees those around him display. He endears himself to us, not only because of his strict adherence to a code that leads him to remove some very nasty characters from society, but through his relationships. He is at various times seen as a good employee, a devoted brother, a faithful husband and loving father.
Dexter, played brilliantly by Michael C. Hall, is only one character though. Dexter's sister, Deb, played by wife-in-real-life Jennifer Carpenter, is a smart, foul-mouthed cop devoted to the job and constantly trying to prove her competence and advance through the ranks of the department. Vince Masuka is a fellow police lab tech who regularly makes the most inappropriate (and hilarious) comments imaginable. And those are only a couple out of a great cast of regulars which is complemented each season by veteran actors like Keith Carradine, Jimmy Smits and most recently, John Lithgow who won a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his role as the Trinity Killer.
Dexter is not for the squeamish or the easily offended. It is definitely not a "family friendly" show. The first season, which aired on CBS, was cleaned up considerably for the network. But the unedited version of the show, which airs on Showtime, contains disturbing subject matter, occasional gratuitous nudity and more "f-bombs" than you would probably care to count. But it is excellent drama — in a league of its own. The characters are original, interesting, funny and engaging. The writing is exceptional with storylines that are unpredictable, and at times even shocking, with many layers and twists. The casting and acting is outstanding. In four seasons I have never been disappointed and the show has just gotten better with time.
Season 4 was particularly good. Playing a family man and serial killer, John Lithgow made a perfect adversary for Dexter, who spent the season trying to convince himself that he could successfully juggle his life as a serial killer with his more recent one as family man. I made the mistake of scanning the message boards for info about the much anticipated season 4 finale before watching it and found a post by someone who accurately predicted the shocker ending. In spite of having read an accurate prediction of the ending ahead of time and seeing a few spoiler lines pop up on Twitter the night the show aired, the finale still had me gasping aloud at the ending and I thought about it for weeks afterward.
Above all, for those who like drama, mysteries and thrillers, Dexter satisfies both intellectually and emotionally. My heart beats faster just thinking about the return of the show and soon I will be counting down the days. I know that sounds really geeky, and maybe a little creepy, but so be it.
Considering the popularity of the show, both on Showtime and in DVD sales, I am far from the only one pining for the return of my favorite serial killer.

Episode 3.
A good episode.
I love the scene with Dexter and Boyd in the ambulance. Very funny stuff. What does he do with the poor young lady who saw him kill Boyd? He can't kill her. She is innocent, but she's a HUGE lose end. Maybe she will be so thankful that Dexter saved her that she keeps his secret. Maybe she's so 'effed up she won't really remember?
also about episode 3...
There has to be something wrong with the nanny. I say this only because it would be a shame if she was just a plot device to free up Dexter's time.
Ann's not watching any longer, so I'll have to try to catch it this evening before she gets home. Thanks for the spoiler tags, much appreciated.
This season is really great. I didn't think I would like it after killing Rita, but they notched up the tension a bit. I loved Dexter getting shot with the tranq dart, so unexpected. I agree that there is something going on with the nanny.
Also, knowing that the spouse is always a suspect in the murder, it was cool to see them trying to figure out how Kyle Butler fits into all of this.
Plus, Julia Styles.

The only thing I don't like is the whole Kyle Butler angle. Not that they (writers) are pursuing it, but the execution.
It just seems it was way to easy for Laguerta and the FBI guy to blow Quinn off. Not believable to me
Julia and now Peter Weller on Dexter! WIN!
Peter Weller is one of my favorite actors. I'd watch him in anything. I'd take his history course if I could. The man rocks in every way possible. He was the high point of the last three seasons of 24.
The man has gravitas. You can't not notice him when he's on screen.
Have you seen Odyssey 5? He was great in that. Along with Christopher Gorham, Sebastian Roché and Tamara Craig Thomas. That one is right behind Firefly on my favorite shows that got canceled list. Profit is number 3.

Yep, loved him in that.
He's at his best (IMHO) when he speaks in that clipped brusque tone pissed at the world tone he used in the last Dexter. He could read the phonebook and I'd pay to see that.

Well, they had John Lithgow on last year, so if they can get Jeff Goldblum and Clancy Brown for the next few seasons...
Clancy Brown is teh awesome .
Priest: This is a house of God. People are trying to pray. You're disturbing them.

Kurgan: That shall be His undoing.

Some spoilers if you haven't watched yet.
I enjoyed this last episode very much. I love that Lumen has accepted who Dexter is. It feels much more real than with Miguel. Miguel was in it for the thrill, not because he "had to do it" and when, push came to shove, Miguel was not worthy of Dexter's secret. Lumen OTOH is worthy. She's been in the fire and I would say more so than Dexter. What happened to her had to be much more real than what Dexter went through as a child. Tough with something, like what happened to Dexter, happens at such a young age, it probably has a much deeper root psychological hold on you.
I am curious to see what Liddy does with all the info he is gathering on Dexter. He seems like a smart, albeit a bit unorthodox, cop and should he find out who Dexter really is, I think he would end up covering for Dex. I also think he must have some kind of a past relationship with Harry. whether it's good or bad, I don't know.
The ease at which Laguerta made Deb the fall guy felt to easy to me. Is she that much of a cold hearted bitch? If so, I hope Batista dumps her ass.
I love when Batista tells Deb that she is like his little sister, only better, because he likes her. :loloeo:

'Dexter' - 'Take It!': Acceptance
I've been behind on "Dexter" posts the last few weeks mainly because I've been behind on "Dexter." But I'm caught up, and since I saw last night's episode in relative proximity to when it aired, I've got a few thoughts coming up just as soon as I get a complete set of luggage...
I'm still feeling mostly ambivalent about this season of the show.
On the one hand, I like a lot of the actors they've brought in to work with Michael C. Hall, and agree that immediately following Trinity with another singular big bad wouldn't work. And of the various characters who've learned Dexter's secret over the years, Lumen's reaction seems the most human and interesting. (As is Dexter opening himself up to the idea of making a friend in his true identity and not having it be a bad thing.)
The problem, as always, is that we have seen a number of characters learn the truth in the past, just as we've seen cops try to find out what Dexter's really up to, seen Laguerta choose politics over police work, etc., etc. Some of these variations on old themes are interesting, but they're still old themes, and there's no real sense of urgency to the season.
So as always, the show is (in the central Dexter plot, at least) well-crafted enough that I continue to watch to enjoy the performances, but my enthusiasm doesn't extend much beyond that.
What did everybody else think? Season five working better or worse for you?
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/dexter-teenage-wasteland-father-figure (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/dexter-teenage-wasteland-father-figure)
A quick review of last night's "Dexter" coming up just as soon as I tell you where your kidney is...
"Teenage Wasteland" felt very typical of season five as a whole: weird and kind of all over the place, but with enough redeeming features that I was mostly able to shrug off the parts that didn't work.
Specifically, while I wax and wane on the actress who plays Astor, I've always found the Dexter/Astor relationship to be one of the show's more complicated, interesting ones. Our man is never more out of his comfort zone than when he has to deal with her messy adolescent emotions, and I liked seeing him have to deal with her in the middle of this ongoing fustercluck with Lumen and Jordan Chase.
On the other hand, Harry's comment about being surprised to see Dexter putting himself out there and trying to protect someone else was odd, as there was a story in season two or three where Dexter took care of the guy taking creepy photos of Astor. And that was a much darker, more morally-nebulous story, where Dexter beating up an abusive stepdad is more along the lines of Dexter Morgan: World's Cuddliest Serial Killer.
Still, I loved the scene of Dexter and Astor in the car at the end, with Dexter surprised by Astor's question about whether Lumen makes him feel better about Rita and responding with a spontaneous, genuine-sounding declaration of love. Very good stuff from Michael C. Hall there.
And ditto Jennifer Carpenter in the scenes where Deb confronts LaGuerta in her office, and then Quinn in the interrogation room. The non-Dexter stories on the show are always going to be vastly less interesting than the ones about him, but Carpenter almost made me care about the office politics stuff, and of course the Quinn confrontation was about Deb being protective of her brother.
(But also on the other hand, it's the umpteenth case of Deb realizing her boyfriend is a scumbag, and also of Deb edging close to the truth about Dexter without ever really getting there. The writers really need to get to that already or stop teasing it.)
Also on the plus side: Peter Weller is having the time of his life as Liddy, who's like this evil genie Quinn can't get back in the bottle, and the final phone call between Jordan and Lumen was suitably creepy. And also on the negative side: the use of the horrid tinkly Please Laugh Now, This Is A Light Moment in a Drama music (common to so many current dramas, especially the ones on ABC) in the scene where Deb meets Lumen. "Dexter" has never been the most subtle show, but once upon a time it trusted the audience to transition from the dark scenes to the funnier stuff without having to hold anyone's hand about it.
What did everybody else think?
I have to agree; season five has ADD and a let-down from last year (but what wouldn't be) but still worth watching. After all, it's Dexter. It has RoboCop. It has Julia Stiles. Even when it is mediocre it still rocks.
I liked the last ep.
Quote"In her eyes... I'm not a monster at all"
Awww, killers in love.
The season ender left me kind of wanting. I enjoyed it, but...
I wish Lumen would have stayed, but I guess it makes sense that her 'Dark Passenger' wouldn't be as deeply rooted as Dexter's and after killing Chase she would heal and without it (the Dark Passenger) she would have a very hard time being in Dexter's life.
I wish Deb would have found out Dexter's secret.
I am hoping that the favor Quinn owes Dexter gets paid off next season. Also, how does just the blood evidence clear him. Phone calls? Gear checked out in his name? Come on people!
I hate that the writers gave Maria a pass on being superbitch to Deb. Of course things can get complicated, but it's not a licence to superbitchdom.
Another thing that bothers me is the car Dex stole to get to the camp... He crashed it and was bleeding. The car will be reported stolen. Police were crawling all over the camp after deb called in the location. You would think that one of them may have noticed the crash can and checked it out? A Big plot hole (not the only one) that will bother me.
Anyway, I am still looking forward to season!
Looks like there's a lil' monkey wrench to be added to Dexter: Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are rumored to be splitting after 2 years of marriage. Bummer.
I haven't watched any of this season!! waaaaaaa! But I did get introduced to Hall's first series, Six Feet Under while we had the free HBO. Holy cow is that show awesome thus far!
I need to get back into 6 feet. i watched the first three season when it first came out, but stop for some unknown reason.
