Did anyone else find the first episode very disjointed and hard to follow? "Six Months Ago", "Six Months Earlier", jumping back and forth.
I did find the show to have 'grown up' a bit. Previous seasons had treated violence kind of like the way GIJoe cartoons had... implied but nothing really shown. Last night, Emmit takes one in the eye. There were more people getting shot and killed (and it was shown onscreen) than all the previous episodes combined. At least it seemed that way to me. Not a complaint, just a comment.

Yes the first episode was confusing. I understand why they did it that way, for the big reveal about Chuck's decision about his future.
The show's turned a bit Mission Impossible, more guns, but that's spy.
I don't like the pushing and pulling they're doing with Chuck and Sarah. I don't think they'll keep doing that. We've had enough of that for the past two seasons. I'll be disappointed if they keep dragging it out.
Can't wait to see him punch out Superman.
Go Morgan and :'( Julia Ling.
Chuck premieres strong
The first hour of the season 3 premiere of Chuck averaged 3.0 rating with adults 18-49 and 7.7 million viewers and the second hour averaged 2.9 rating with adults 18-49 and 7.2 million.
These were the best numbers since last year's 3D episode the Monday after last year's Super Bowl. Definitely a strong premiere for a scripted show by this year's standards on NBC.
Now of course, the focus shifts to how much of those #s Chuck can hold on to tonight.
Here are the blurbs on Chuck from NBC PR:
* From 9-11 p.m., a special two-hour Sunday third-season debut of "Chuck" (2.9/7 in 18-49, 7.4 million viewers overall) captured the show's highest 18-49 and total-viewer results since February 2, 2009, the night of a special 3-D episode aired one day after the Super Bowl. In key male demos, "Chuck" delivered its highest ratings since December 3, 2007. In the time period, "Chuck" ranked #2 among the major networks in all key adults-male demos — men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 — and #1 in those male categories from 10-11 p.m.
* Versus its "live plus same day" average for originals last season, "Chuck" was up last night by 21 percent in 18-49 (2.9 vs. 2.4) and up 12 percent in total viewers (7.442 million vs. 6.624 million).

I agree with y'all's sentiment on the first ep. And the whole Chuck/Sarah thing is going to get real tired if they keep trying to play the same game all season long. I understand that they don't want to commit, the writers that is, but the back and forth can get downright painful (as in cringe worthy) at times. I had the same problem with Smallville and the whole Clark/Lana dynamic. I suffered through it, but I think it took away from the show. I believe Smallville would have been better severed had Clark and Lana had longer stretches of being together/apart. It would have made the breakups have more of an emotional impact. I think the same is true for Chuck. If you keep yanking that Chuck/Sarah chain over and over and over, eventually I am going to get irritated.
The only show that handled the will they/won't they dealio was News Radio. The two leads did it right away (like the second episode) and it was a riot.

It
was pretty cringeworthy. Contrast Chuck and Sarah with Castle and Beckett: I don't feel the same heartbreak. There's definitely a difference between the two. The romance is very subtle on Castle, but on Chuck it is full-on. (romance is in the sense of falling in love, not sexual tension) Chuck is not a scoundrel like Castle who can get away with being annoying to Beckett but stupid enough not to sense Beckett has some feelings for him. Chuck is the "too-nice geek." He's not enough of a bad boy or has a confident swagger; he's just charming and real. What you see is what you get with Chuck, which is totally opposite to the fake world of spies.
The sexual/romantic tension is a delicate balance between fun and heartbreak. The great thing about Castle is that even if Beckett and Castle don't get together it won't be the end of the world. The Chuck/Sarah pairing is pretty integral to the story and they have to be careful on they handle it. Doesn't mean we won't get frustrated and want them to just do it already.
I think Chuck's emotions fooling with his Intersect is an interesting way to force him to deal with his quirkiness and self confidence.

They will lose something if they get rid of that tension so they will definitely keep it going as
long as they can. They should have started off a little slower with the romance and done
a more gradual build up but I guess they didn't know how long they would be around so
it kind of messes with the storylines. This is a big downside of the way they do programming
anymore. This constant playing with how long they will be on and how many episodes they
can have a season shoots the story all to hell. It's different with stand alone shows but a
show like Chuck with an ongoing underlying story gets ruined in the process.
Tonight's episode was a hoot: el angel de la muerta!
Eric commented that a.b. must have fun channeling all that Poli frustration into Casey's storylines. I loved his look when they were discussing the Premier's blood type. ;)

Probably had to cut costs somewhere. It looks like they are using green screens as backdrops and CGI'ing the 'locations' in as well. As long as it keeps the show on the air, I can live with it.
Pearl said it was due to cost cutting.

Ratings from 1/11/2010 episode:
Here's what NBC PR had to say about Chuck:
* At 8 p.m. ET, the regular-slot season premiere of "Chuck" (2.6 rating, 7 share in adults 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall) scored the show's highest regular-slot results in 18-49 and total viewers since the special 3-D telecast on February 2, 2009, the night after the Super Bowl. It was also the biggest total-viewer average for NBC in this time period with regular programming since that February 2 "Chuck." In a time slot that last night included competition from Fox's "House," ABC's "The Bachelor" and CBS's comedies, "Chuck" generated growth from its first half-hour to its second of 8 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.7 from a 2.5) and 16 percent in adults 18-34 (2.2 vs. 1.9).
* Compared with NBC's average in the time-period last season, last night's "Chuck" is up 18 percent in 18-49 rating (2.6 vs. 2.2, live plus same day) and up 14% in total viewers (7.322 million vs. 6.409 million).
Chuck got a 2.5 A18-49 rating the first half hour and a 2.7 the last half hour.

The second show lacked Ellie and Awesome which looks like may be a trend since they
are not living with Chuck anymore they won't be showing up in casual at home scenes.
This is not good if they are going to lose the charm of secondary characters to cost cut.

Scrubs did this the last year or so. They would sign the regulars but to cut costs two episodes (I'm pretty sure) a year did not feature all the characters. Everyone was cool with this in order to keep their jobs. Now it would be hard not to feature Chuck every episode, so it may just be the supporting cast. NBC said to bring the show back they would need to cut costs. We have a third season so we can't complain too much. Hey, at least Ellie and Awesome have those commercials to help pad out the paycheck.

I think the need to cost cut was just a bunch of malarky so NBC could blackmail them into
taking less so they could stay on. Look at their lineups now, down the tubes. They were already
saving money with Jay Leno 5 nights a week. Destroying a good show to save a buck when
you don't have very many good shows and your station is going down the tubes seems kind of
counterproductive. Hopefully the ratings will help but good ratings at a cheaper cost won't
really encourage them to pay more if they are doing just as well for less.

I think all they look at is ratings and the bottom line. Creative shows be damned. If "destroying shows" is a side effect, so be it in their eyes. The days of "Must See TV" are over for NBC ~ I don't think they ever really recovered from losing Friends. The only shows worth a damn on Thursdays are 30 Rock and The Office. I don't watch them. Chuck is the only show on NBC I watch.
We all know they made a BIG mistake moving Leno to 10pm ~ they fucked over Conan and other shows, old and new. Now Leno looks like the bad guy. It's a shame Conan's Tonight Show didn't work. Then again would we be having this controversy if Leno just RETIRED?
Thank God there's more than one network and those lovely little buttons on the remote called "channel" and "OFF." :haha:

I doubt it. Spooky keeps tabs on Julia's Twitter account, but I don't know if she's at liberty to say yea or nay to returning. The season could be pretty much fleshed out but for a few eps.
Isn't it a 13-ep season? Then again it's a 19-ep season, so knows. We are in the Twilight Zone nowadays.
I think they have already written (if not pretty much filmed) the first 13 episode arc. They decided to go ahead and run with the 13 as given, then do a mini-arc of the back six. I think I read her saying she might be in the last six.

Really , that's all that needs to be done .
"Guest Star" Wu is better than no Wu .
( heck I can foresee an arc where the CIA took Casey up on his thoughts and made her a spy - which would explain her running out on Morgan )
Last night's ep was a lil' nail-biting. Chuck's getting better talking off the cuff. More spy gear: the pen, the CD box-compartment that needed the key.

I never saw Superman with him in it. Were his eyes blue? This looks like his natural color
but they sure are dark. Makes his coloring very striking although a little vampirish since he is
so pale. Obviously one or the other are contacts. His eyes on Chuck are odd in that they
look like they are red rimmed all the time. I haven't watched last nights show yet so I guess
I should stay out of here until I do although it doesn't really bother me to be spoiled.
Crap, tvbythenumbers.com has Chuck showing an "in danger of being canceled" status. Ratings have been going down since the season 3 premiere.

I agree. They have a good show and blow it with budget cuts in order to bring it back and then
put on a lousy storyline. They set it up to fail by cutting the heart and soul out of it and then they
wonder why their numbers are down. There are some shows that just can't get away with being
done on the cheap and still be the same show. The quirkiness of all the characters at the BuyMore
gave this show it's charm.
Last week's ep was pretty goofy in terms of using all the Buy More guys and actually, I liked the ep where Chuck told Morgan his secret. So I take it back, season3 hasn't been that bad. The hippie comment by Casey was priceless and you know AB loved saying it. And Jeffster was back in full form. They just can't keep Chuck and Sarah apart. It's season 3, just go ahead already.
As for cutting the budget, that really is on NBC.
And I'm glad that Ellie and Awesome are staying. I know they're not the stars but it wouldn't feel like Chuck without his sis and Awesome.

I hate Shaw's character and it has a tendency to make me enjoy the episodes he is in less.
Some of the shows have been fine but it is so obvious that the budget cuts cost them by not
having everyone in all the shows. The ones where they have sent Morgan off to a conference
or show very little of the BuyMore group annoy me and is the price we paid for them to bring
the series back. NBC needs every good show they have right now and they didn't need to
sabotage one of their better ones by cutting costs. I just don't understand that mentality if
they want it to succeed. They cut what makes the show really special and then the ratings
go down so then they say we gave you another chance and it didn't work when they are the
ones responsible for letting it go down the tubes. They shouldn't have delayed to start of it
either. I really don't understand networks. They sabotage good shows and then blame the
shows for losing ratings.
OK, did last night really happen?
From what I'm reading on chucktv.net, last night's episode was supposed to be the original season finale, before NBC ordered more episodes.
While I am happy about the outcome, I feel like something was missing, or like the whole episode didn't gel or something. Maybe I'm off-base and need to re-watch it.
At any rate they showed a HUGE preview of upcoming episodes, which will start airing April 26th and the lovely Julia Ling is in it!

This was supposed to be the season finale. When NBC ordered six more, they decided instead of padding the season, they would end that story arc with Shaw wearing a bullet-proof vest, drawing the Ring leader out into the open, and faking his death while making Chuck a real spy and then going on to another story arc of the final six episodes this season.

I'm really not trying to toy with your emotions, Chuck fans. Honest. But I just received a fresh batch of extremely reliable intel that has led me to once again tweak the show's status on my Bubble Show Scorecard.
After two anxiety-inducing weeks at "could go either way," I'm happy to report that Chuck is back to being a "safe bet." A well-placed source close to Team Bartowski whose name is not Josh Schwartz (scout's honor!) tells me "it's looking good" that NBC will do the right thing and renew the show for a fourth season.
A final decision isn't expected for a few more weeks, so there's a good chance my buzzometer will fluctuate again. Even more reason to enjoy this bit of good news while it lasts!

Adam hinted as much on the radio show he co-hosted a few weeks ago. He more or less said that
good news was coming. I hope so. I really love this show even if the Shaw saga was not the best. I
hope they learned their lesson though and will bring back or show all of the characters in each episode.
You could definitely see the quality cuts this season not counting the lousy storyline. Monday's new show
looks cute.
Yay!! The real Chuck is finally back. I loved Mon. show although it was a little mushy. :) But the
quality was so much better, more interaction with cast, not as dark, just more fun. I hope it is not
too late for them and Ellie and Awesome aren't leaving surely. I haven't read up on it yet. Lester
can really sing. Love the Jeffster segments.
I have a lunch date with Chuck today 'cause I was watching Hugh Laurie and Andre Braugher on House last night. (meesa bad) But I did see Anna walk in and Morgan walk from the back of the store, looking like a million bucks. How awesome was that. O0

House rocks. Doubly so with Andre Braugher.
Well just watched the episode
For some reason, this mini arc has been sucking the soul out of Chuck for me. First Ellie and Awesome are in Africa and now they're not. Oh, it's just a ploy to bring Scott Bakula back into the fold. Julia Ling was practically wasted. I didn't want to see her get dumped by Morgan, no matter how awesome it was to see him walk over to her in a tuxedo! And now Chuck's dreaming like Allison Dubois, aka the Psychic Intersect. How convenient. Does this mean I don't have to watch Medium now? These dreams mean we don't have to wait for him to "flash," but it rips off Medium BIG time. I have become a huge Medium fan in the past few years and have gotten used to the show developing Allison's psychic abilities, but this rip-off just takes the fun out of Chuck. I was pretty bored. It's not logical.
Tonight!
Aw, John Casey, dad-spy.
Thumbs up, two thumbs way up.
Broken thumbs up!
So....
Dad died.... near the base where Shaw was brought back to life by some sort of cell regeneration technology... Oh Boy! Just sayin'

I thought maybe that as paranoid as he was, he would have been wearing a bulletproof/fake blood vest. But, alas. That's just wishful thinking.
PS. Do you know how much digging would have been required for that underground basement? Did he ever call Miss Utility or did he just DIG?
I didn't think they could top last year's finale, but they did.
Wow!
Yeah, that was really, really good. It was like the Snickers of 2010 finales.
Blooper Reel...

Not as good as last year's, but entertaining. :D
