Title: Need help with Tom's book!!! Writers, English experts, anyone?
Post by: Saxon on December 31, 2009, 12:33:11 AM
This sounds crazy, but Tom needs some help with the "About the Author" part of his book. He had someone do the editing on this main manuscript, but he's got the Preface and the Author pages to add to it for a contest that ends in Feb. He's wanting to send it off in a day or two and I keep thinking there are parts that need to be capitalized. Okay, here's how part of it reads:

..."After several more years as the detective unit supervisor, Thomas transferred to the coroner division, where he currently serves as both Chief Deputy Coroner and Public Administrator. He also serves as the agency's hostage negotiation team leader, and as administrative coordinator of the department's youth explorer program."

I keep thinking those positions should be capitalized. I just can't remember the rules. You know, "Detective Unit", "Coroner Division", "Hostage Negotiation Team" and "Explorer Program".

What do you guys think? These were the only parts that didn't get edited by a published writer, so Tom's not sure. The book (it's like 3 text book size worth of writing), is mostly cop stuff, teaching tools, and this part is the only 'personal' part.

Any help would be appreciated.

Soon too...he's wanting to get it sent off so he doesn't miss the deadline. Thanks!! Y'all feel free to ask any English teachers you know! lol!

Thanks!!

I'd say they only need capitalization if they were the actual titles of the positions.

"Explorer" certainly would, if it's the Boy Scouts Explorer group.

Detective Unit Supervisor should be since it sounds like a job title.
Coroner Division sounds like the name of the division so probably should
be, also Administrative Coordinator and Explorer Program.  Hostage
Negotiation Team to since that is a title.

My English/Speech teaching Aunt sat down with him and helped him out. Agreed with you on the Explorers too. She looked at his Preface too, and did a couple of changes we wouldn't/didn't catch.

Thanks!

Tom was explaining that some of the phrases he used were not the exact/official 'titles' of the 'units'. In fact, the 'Hostage Negotiation Team' is actually 'officially' 'titled' the "Crisis Resolution Team". But some cops/units use a phrase similar to that for the people who come in and, say, councel rape victims after the fact. So, he used the title the had when they started which explains more what they do. I don't know if you guys remembered the shortlived tv show that Gina was the 'cop boss' and the two cops (a couple, the guy being on Warehouse 13 now), went in first before the SWAT guys to try to get things settled without force...anyway, Tom's the head of that unit.

Anyhoo...I can't remember what they went with, but she made a few changes, so I knew things weren't covered, so visiting my aunt helped a lot.

Thanks for the input.
