When Jeremy was in 5th grade we tried a relatively new technique that helped him 'exercise and stregthen' the part of the brain that helps a person become/remain 'calm and focused'. The doc would attach these little sticky electrode things to his head that read his brain waves. Jeremy understood all of it (beta wave, alpha waves, delta waves)...at first the 'games' she had him play were to make a simple graphic box 'grow' while another box get small....it was all programmed so that when he was calm, the right reaction would happen. Almost like muscle memory for the mind. Once he mastered the easy game (I tried it and it wasn't as easy as it seems), he moved on to a 'pac man' type game. He mastered that in no time.
It was around that time that he decided that he didn't want to take anymore meds for the TS and ADHD that was plaguing him. Off meds, he had to sort of start over a bit, but very quickly he was back to controlling his own brain. Something that everyone does without realizing it. Something that comes naturally as one matures. It really was facinating.
I thought that Jeremy would want to go into that field...but now you can buy those machines that she used for home use, to relax, help control pain, so it's not some 'specialized' field anymore. I think it was called "EEG" something or other.
Things that can be done with brains do not surprise me!
