5 Reasons "Mythbusters" Is One of the Best Nerd Shows On TV
05.01.12 Written by Dan Seitz
Somewhere along the line, quietly, "Mythbusters" passed 200 episodes. That's a hell of an achievement for any TV series, especially a goofy reality show about two nerds blowing things up. In fact, the show's approaching ten years on the air with consistently high ratings, and a still-rabid fan base.
And there's reasons for that. True, we're not talking about an ingenious program here. It's got its flaws, and not everybody loves the personalities involved.
But it's also got its virtues, making it one of the best shows for nerds on TV. Virtues like...
#5) Shutting Up Anti-Science Trolls and Conspiracy Theorists
Is there a moment greater for people who love science than two special effects artists taking all the moon landing nuts by the throat and kicking them in the groin repeatedly? Short of one of them getting decked by an actual astronaut? Or when they put widely-held and completely sexist beliefs to the test and utterly destroy them?
Seriously, this is a show that just last episode trashed the idea that women can't drive because they wear high heels. That probably marks the end of that particular belief, because rebutting it is now a matter of pulling up the right YouTube clip instead of a woman forced to ask "How would you know?"
That's really the thing, this show does America a public service by actually trying out this stuff and demonstrating whether it's true or false. Yeah, they'll never convince the hardcore troll...but that troll will have a harder time finding people to believe him.
#4) They Call Out Crappy Journalism
A subtle, but strong, undercurrent of "Mythbusters" is "don't believe everything you read, especially if somebody who didn't study physics wrote it". There are multiple moments in the show where they'll stumble across newspaper articles offering explicit circumstances...only to discover that article was blatantly full of gao se.
This is important because honestly, even educated people can be shockingly ignorant of science. Go around your office, ask anybody with a college degree about evolution, and you'll find at least one dolt who thinks it's "controversial". True, they can't be everywhere, but they can at least chasten bad journalists where they find them.
#3) They Often Stumble Across Something Fascinating
A lot of shows will teach you something about safety methods, product design, the laws of physics, or history. A nice touch is that if, say, they start talking about something, they will actually bother to do their research before the fact, generally at Adam's expense.
This also leads to some of the funniest moments in the show, like their consistent failure to launch a bumper by discovering that, actually, the thing has a lot of safety features built in to prevent, say, two nuts lighting an old car on fire to see what happens.
#2) It's One of the Few Science Shows On The Air to Get Into The Scientific Method
The show is essentially high school science: they start with a hypothesis, predict its accuracy, develop an experiment to test it, and see what happens.
Sure, they do so in the most ridiculous way possible, said experiment is usually sloppy or ridiculous (for example, their sample sizes are almost always too small) and they'll never submit a paper to a peer-reviewed journal, but stop and consider for a moment that this is one of the few shows that actually does this in the first place. Even the PBS shows people tend to sleep through don't show science as a discipline of thought, but a discipline of action. "Mythbusters" might be one of the few programs on the air that doesn't think performing complex mechanical experiments is the same thing as sending emails.
#1) The Mythbusters Have Become America's Peer Review
Sure, we didn't need to know that, say, the mirror trick from "The Mummy" worked or whether "Date Night" got how to handle two interlinked cars right.
But when was the last time somebody actually tried firing a bullet and dropping one at the same time to see whether or not the physics held up? Or tested out a viral video's science to see what's wrong and what's right about it?
That's the thing: "Mythbusters", belief by belief, has become peer review for all the stupid stuff we do and believe. Sure, more often than not, they're something of a buzzkill. But it's an important and funny buzzkill.
And besides, at least they blow something up.

I like Mythbusters. I don't watch every episode, but I am never disappointed when I do watch. There is always something interesting, or as has been pointed out alreasy, someone interesting to watch.
It is a great show, but like Dirty Jobs, they are running out of stuff to do. The last couple of episodes have been stuff like 'who drives best in heels, men or women' and 'who packs a car better, men or women'.
Plus the whole shooting the canon ball through a random house two miles away didn't help things.

Some farker said the cannonball fiasco wasn't nearly as bad is it could've been .
Apparently the homeowners are fans and settled for repairs and asked the guys to sign the hole .
If true
:fbshiny:
Given the amount of gao se they've blown up over the years, one accident is a damn good safety record. Still, lucky nobody was killed and yes the homeowners were very cool about it.
I was watching American Guns last night and, as with all the gun shows, they add explosives to the mix. They built and old-timey six shooter for a Reverend who is a competition cowboy action shooter and when one of the explosive props detonated they almost got clobbered by chunks of debris.
The explosive action starts at about the 1:25 mark.

Yeah ,
way lucky no one was hurt/killed .
Especially when you think that actors have been killed on set by blanks let alone bullets .

We were watching this very Preacher episode and Pearl saw the brief shot of the store rules sign. #1 was that all guns were loaded. I explained to her that was the first thing you learn with gun safety -- to treat them as if they all are loaded.

It's appalling how most non-gun folks are oblivious to this .

When I was in Honduras we were training some of the Hondurans Army how to use the M16's they just bought from the US and the first thing the instructor told these guys was that he took safety very seriously and would not tolerate any safety violations and it didn't matter if the gun weapon was loaded or not.
Well, one of the Hondurans ended up casually waving his unloaded M16 around and the instructor walked up to him and gave him a serious butt stock to the helmet. Knocked him out for a sec and he woke up to all his buddies laughing at him. There were no more safety violations.

I stumbled across the bowling vid at Fark - dang groovy .
So now I'm killing time watching some Nerdist vids
:D
The Nerdist episode with Matt Smith and Craig Ferguson is funny as heck.
Hardwick started on MTV's Singled Out, a dating game show, with co-hostess/eye candy Jenny McCarthy.
He did host Web Soup. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hardwick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hardwick)
Need to find video of this at some point:
QuoteOn December 24, 2011, BBC America aired The Nerdist: The Year in Review, a comedy special hosted by Hardwick. Celebrity guests included David Tennant and Simon Pegg with Hardwick in London; and Nathan Fillion, Wil Wheaton, and Weird Al Yankovic in Los Angeles.

"Doctor Who" Fans Hack Road Sign
by Kyle Anderson on May 23, 2012
Photo: Matt Sebastian/Daily Camera
This comes from my home state of Colorado, where some intrepid Doctor Who fans in Boulder seem to have hacked a digital road sign to display that drivers should look out for Daleks. It's a good bit of advice, though I don't think the Colorado Department of Transportation is specifically too happy about it. If you know about or have ever been to Boulder, you can pretty much bet this stunt was fueled by boredom and herbal narcotics. Still, it's good to know Whovians are everywhere. You can read the full article from the Boulder Daily Camera here. Thanks a lot to my friend Ryan Grassmeyer for sending me this picture.

Another gun enthusiast show is now gone from the television schedule.
The Discovery Channel tells The Washington Times that "Ted Nugent's Gun Crazy" won't return with fresh episodes. The source tells the newspaper that "Gun Crazy" didn't draw big ratings during its broadcasts, but it's hard not to isolate the cancellation from the ongoing fallout from Friday's school shooting in Connecticut.
The news comes directly after the channel cancelled "American Guns," a reality show set in a Colorado gun shop.
Nugent is an avowed hunter and gun enthusiast as well as a veteran rocker famous for hits like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Wango Tango."
