There's no way we'll know the author's intent, though one could presume if he'd not been oblivious he would have gone the route that wouldn't have gotten him fired.

The on-air ESPN dude used the phrase "Chink in the armor" in the middle of a conversation, I'd posit, without thinking and did not realize what he had said. The guy who wrote the headline on the website had to think on it and chose his words and still had time to pull it back and did not.
