... come back

Every year about this thyme, rabid fans of shows perceived to be on the bubble launch campaigns to convince networks to renew their favorite series. So Chuck fans on Monday plan to show NBC execs their loyalty by spiking sandwich sales en masse at Subway stores and sending Nerds candies. It didn't work for Moonlight at CBS but did for Jericho. This thyme, I can tell you the Chuck campaign is having an effect on the NBC suits. "It's a good show, a solid show, and it's in contention to come back," an insider tells me. "I'm betting it'll end up back. But that decision hasn't been made yet." Interestingly, it's not just fanboys trying to keep the Josh Schwartz show on the air, it's also mainstream TV critics and reporters. The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Entertainment Weekly have all weighed i positively. Television Without Pity listed 8 reasons to save the series. Me? I haven't even watched 3 minutes of it.

Nikki Finke is usually a good source of info. I feel somewhat more optimistic that we will get a third season now.

But on the other hand, the NBC website shows last night's episode as the 'series finale'. Upper right hand corner, in the "Next On" section.

But on their Facebook page they say that was a mistake and it should say season finale.

I'm more confused than Obama with a busted teleprompter at this point.

Chuck season finale, hopefully not series finale

There are some minor spoilers in here for Monday night's season two finale of  Chuck.  You have been warned.  I really enjoyed the season finale and I hope Chuck manages to return for a season three.   I take some abuse about being a Chuck fanboy, but that I'm holding out some hope is based on the numbers.  I'm also a Life fanboy, but I'm not holding out any hope at all for seeing more Charlie Crews.  With its numbers, Chuck really is right on top of the bubble.

I know a few people will be waiting anxiously for the numbers Tuesday morning/afternoon, but barring massive changes to the ratings in either direction (and that seems unlikely happen) the ratings for the finale probably won't have much/any bearing on whether NBC renews the show or not.

While reports of success with Subway product placement, not to mention a fan campaign to buy Subway subs can't hurt, like many others, I believe it boils down to NBC and Warner Brothers playing "let's make a deal" in terms of negotiating the licensing fees.

After reading some things from Chuck creators Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak over the last week, I was worried that in the event the show got canceled, fans would wind up wishing that last week's penultimate episode of the season would've been the finale.  But those worries were unwarranted, at least for me.

Both of the last two episodes were fun and if the show doesn't wind up coming back, I'd be ok with tonight's episode as a finale as far as closure goes.  But I confess, I don't need much in the way of closure with TV shows.  Sure, I'd like to see how it played out with the new badass,  kung fu fighting Chuck.   It would definitely be fun to see how it changed the dynamic with Agent Casey, but if the show comes back I think something would happen to give Casey the upper-hand back after a few episodes.

If it was a finale, they went out swinging in terms of paying homage to the 1980s. Because if I had to describe everything that was wrong with the 1980s in only two words, those two words would probably be, "Mr. Roboto".

Nonetheless, Jeffster, complete with string accompaniment was, well, awesome.  Here's hoping last night's  episode was merely a nice setup for season three.  If it doesn't work out that way, to Messrs Schwartz and Fedak and everyone involved with making the show, domo arigato.

And now we wait.  But, we won't have to wait too long.  We'll know for sure no later than next Tuesday, and hopefully even sooner.

TV By The Numbers predicts that Chuck has a 75-85% chance or renewal.

Jessi has a bunch of 'insider' type friends on her facebook/myspace places who work on shows like Sarah Silverman, Reno 911 and stuff like that. One big flap was about how a bunch of the major players from Reno were just 'let go' very unceremoniously and the fans were livid. Reportedly, some 'stars' showed up for work and were told at the gate to 'go home', they were no longer 'on the show'. huh? Now, I don't know who these people are, how accurate they are, or what, but one entry said something along the lines of, "....that's how it happened for some members of the "Chuck" cast, came to work and were turned away at the gate, but apparently that was recinded recently by some turn of events". So, who knows? Maybe it WAS supposed to be 'series finale', but now it's 'season'...hence the 'to be continued' ending.

*crosses fingers*
