SOQUEL - Actor Alan Tudyk, whose film credits include "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" and the British comedy "Death at a Funeral," was arrested early Sunday in Soquel on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Tudyk was pulled over about 1 a.m. on Soquel Drive near Robertson Road, just north of downtown Soquel, after officers observed him speeding in a silver Land Cruiser owned by a friend, the CHP reported. He was going 40 in a 25 mph zone, officer Sarah Jackson said.

Tudyk, who was visiting the area, told the arresting officer he had a few beers at 99 Bottles in Santa Cruz, officer Trevor Smith said.

Tudyk declined to take a breath test, but he failed a field sobriety test, Smith said. Results of his blood alcohol test are pending.

Tudyk was arrested without incident, Jackson said.

The Land Cruiser was released to a female passenger who was sober, Smith said.

Tudyk played Steve the Pirate in "Dodgeball" and Wash in the sci-fi western TV series "Firefly." He also voiced Sonny in the Will Smith sci-fi thriller "I, Robot."

In 2000, Tudyk played Gerhardt, a gay German drug addict, alongside Sandra Bullock and Viggo Mortensen in "28 Days," and in 2007, he played Doc Potter in "3:10 to Yuma."

It is not a good idea, period. Most of us have done it though.  <shamefully raises hand>  Kudos to those who never have.

When I was young and stupid, I acted young and stupid. About halfway home I can remember promising God that if I got home okay I'd never do it again. He guided me home safely and I've kept my end of the deal as well. I do not remember leaving the party, I do not remember getting home, but I do remember making that promise.

I've done young and stupid ( and loved it ) but these days I just don't bother driving if I've had more than a few .

Unfortunately we have MADD up here and they're aiming for zero tolerance .

As a person who tends bar I find that position to be obnoxious .
As a patron I find it doubly so .

.08 is the legal limit .
Unless you're lower .

Make sense ?

In Missouri (and perhaps other states?), the bartender holds some legal responsibility if a patron drinks too much and gets in a wreck, and the bar can be sued.

While he may or may not hold a moral duty to cut someone off, making it legal just seems ... wrong.

On a quick Google, it looks like Missouri revised her dram shop laws (http://www.cfif.org/htdocs/freedomline/current/guest_commentary/dram_shop_liability.htm) so that the patron must be "significantly uncoordinated physical action or significant physical dysfunction."  Which, I suppose, is better.

Missouri also has done many alcohol checkpoints, which some have argued are unconstitutional (guilty until proven innocent). Not sure if that's still the case -- they were very big in the 80s when MADD was making their big push down here.

In high school, my buddies and I would go out weekly and cruise a back country road for hours, drinking and jamming to tunes.  I wouldn't dare do that now. lol

Anyone who's had more than a few ( three+ ) I usually ask if they want a cab .

Often , if the person is obviously over , as I dial they just sneak out and dash away . It's annoying that people feel I'm responsible for their subterfuge .
