Title: Eve Online
Post by: Spooky on March 04, 2011, 09:15:58 AM
It's my first MMO .I did the 14 day trial thing a couple of weeks ago and I am liking it so far. I bought just 60 days worth of time. We'll see how it goes. I still don't know how I am going to play the game. I've never been into PVP and Eve is a--anything goes--PVP game, but it also has very in depth economic game mechanics and I think that appeals to me more, but I have been learning that you can't trust anyone int his game. Especially when you fly your ship into low or no security areas. Some seem to play the game just to kill as many other players as possible and, if you don't learn how to defend yourself, they will wipe their arses with the remains of your ship over and over again.

I haven't ventured into nullsec (no security) space yet. I am too young in the game and can't afford to lose what I have earned yet, but it seems you can become pretty rich flying in nullsec by fighting, mining, exploring, trading and salvaging. It's just very, very dangerous.

Here's to wasting hours in front of the monitor! :drink:

I tried the demo a few months ago but just couldn't get into it.  Granted, it could be that I'm just tired of MMOs in general at this point.

It doesn't surprise me that there are griefers, though.  And add to it the possibility of looting real money (in the form of monthly game time) and I can definitely see it happening.  Even in World of Warcraft there were people who liked killing other players many levels below them just to aggravate them.

Pretty game though, and I've read there have been some truly epic space battles involving many, many ships.

I've read that there were over 3000 folks in a battle at one time. CRAZY! This is a crazy story too.

QuoteRecord breaking heist rocks Eve Online guild to the tune of $16,500 USD in virtual goods

This was published in September's issue of PC Gamer UK, a popular video game article magazine. It is a detailed account of what has to be one of most beautifully executed in-game scams in a MMORPG ever pulled. It breaks all previous world records for 'virtual crime'.

The game in question is Eve Online, an open ended sci-fi mmorpg with a heavy emphasis on roleplaying, where developers try to give their players as much freedom as possible, and where corporate espionage and political intrigue have become an integral part of the game.

The perpetrator of the heist was the Guiding Hand Social Club (GHSC) corporation (a corporation being similar to a clan in Eve); a freelance mercenary outfit that offers their services (which usually involves corp infiltration, theft and assassination) to the highest bidder. Over a year in planning, the GHSC infilitrated their target's corp with their own members and gained their trust, as well as access to the corp hangers, with time. It all concluded in a perfectly timed climax, with a massive theft in multiple corp hangars synchronized with the in-game killing of the corporation's CEO, the primary target of the contract.

What's most interesting and impressive about this operation is that it was entirely 'legal' and within the game's own rules, and the mastermind and his agents pulled it off together flawlessly, all the while staying in character. The estimated real-life value of the items stolen is, according to PC Gamer, $16,500 US. The in-game value of course is much, much higher as the things stolen would take years and years to aquire.

And now, the PC Gamer scans. I hope you'll find it as entertaining a read as I have.

I think so too. I am thinking about doing something like that my own self. Join a corp and play nicey nice for a few months to gain their trust and then, when the money is right, I'd turn on 'em and see how much loot I can snag before rabbiting. That'll be an interesting day. Then I'd be all, "Make something up. Don't tell 'em what I did."  >:D

I've been playing pretty safe since I stared Eve, but tonight I though I'd get a little adventurous and see if I could scan down a wormhole and go into it and see what was there. It took me about 15 minutes to scan, move probes and scan again and again and again before I go t a lock on the wormhole entrance. I warped to it and sat there staring at it and debated the pros and cons of entering. I decided to brave it.

Once inside wormhole space, I started scanning for something interesting to explore. I found an anomaly that could end up giving me some good loot, but before I could warp to it I noticed half my shields were gone in a split second. AMBUSHED!

Another player had been stalking me and he warped to me, uncloaked and then unloaded on me. OUCH! I tried to fight back. I released my three wimpy drones. He blew them away like they were nuthin'. I activated my four missile launchers, but they probably felt like nats to him. Before I knew it my shields were gone and my armor was failing fast. I had fired a dozen or so missiles, but his shields were still at +90% and in the time it took me to notice that I wasn't doing any damage to him, my armor was gone and all that was keeping me from the cold of space was the thin skin of my ship. I tried to warp to the wormhole exit, but he had me jammed (I knew I should have fitted the warp core stabilizer instead of the cargo bay extender!) and then the explosion. Ship gone and I am sitting in my pod. Luckily it takes a while to get a lock on someones pod and I was able to warp to the wormhole exit and make it back to my station. Whew! If he would have been able to shoot my pod and kill me, I would have awaken in my clone with a massive loss of skills. It would have been like being set back a month of skill training. So losing 10+ million in game money hurts, but I can afford it. I hope I run into this guy in a couple of months so I can give him a good fight.

One thing I like about Eve is that you can get Kill Mail with all the details of the fight.

No. It a 3D Character creator in game. You can control feature size and shape to some extent, but I was not a good enough artist (drawing/sculpting wise) to be able to look at a photo of joss and adjust my avatars features to look like his.

Some folks are very good at it.

What is kind of cool with Dust is that it's and FPS (first person shooter) that will interact with Eve Online (an MMO). Not real clear on the hows and whys, but the rumor is that folks playing Dust will be able to call down air strikes from players in Eve. That's the big rumor anyway.

PS3s go for about $300 new, $200 used. Considering that they are Blu-ray players as well (built-in Wi-fi, 160GB HD, wireless controller, etc.) pretty good deal. If you are lucky enough to find one of the 60GB units, they are PS2 compatible.

I know people who drop $300+ a month on cigarettes and think nothing of it. Tell your Eve Online buddies to man up and save up and get them the third best console of this generation.

QuoteCCP confirmed that just as in the climax of the E3 trailer, DUST defenses will include buildings able to attack EVE players in orbit of the planet. When DUST goes live, EVE players may find themselves at odds with their planetbound counterparts. On the other hand, CCP pointed out that EVE players may be necessary for the transport of clones, tanks and other supplies to a destination planet for war. Although there will be NPC-generated war contracts, EVE players will almost certainly also be the best way to fund wars on the ground.

EVE Online server offline due to DDOS attack

by Brendan Drain  on Jun 14th 2011 2:30PM
Sci-fi, EVE Online, MMO industry, News items

Just over an hour ago, the EVE Online login and website servers became unresponsive and went offline. A Twitter user purporting to represent the group responsible for the major PSN outage earlier this month is claiming credit for the EVE server outage. According to the user, the DDOS is part of a series of attacks today that has also shut down the Minecraft login servers and The Escapist magazine's website.

CCP released an update on Facebook and Twitter stating that the issue is currently under investigation. "EVE Online and related services are currently offline and will return as soon as possible following investigation of some issues." CCP was unable to comment further on the outage but urges players to watch the EVE Facebook and Twitter feeds for further updates as they become available.

After a fair amount of reading about lulzsec, I have come to the conclusion that--while they claim their attacks are to point out security weaknesses--they are cyber-terrorists group using scare tactics to speed up the drive for internet regulation legislation. John Casey works/worked for the NSA right? Can we send him to take care of these tards?

I'd assume so, but I can't quote any specific laws. The problem is that a DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attack is usually launched after the person responsible is able to infect a bunch of innocent people's computers with malware/bots that end up flooding the target system with so many requests that they can't function anymore and have to be shut down or crash. The fact that the attack is being perpetrated from a large number unsuspecting victim's computers from all over the world, makes it very, very hard to nail down the bad guy.

More on DDOS if you are so inclined: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack)

If I interfere with say , a hospital's ability to function I'd consider that to be a criminal act .

I'd posit that doing the same to your phone service would be criminal too .

It's sort of like infecting a classroom of kids with Ebola and sending them into the general population ....

In the Police and Justice Act 2006, the United Kingdom specifically outlawed denial-of-service attacks and set a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.[46]

In the US, there can be a serious federal crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act with penalties that include years of imprisonment. Many other countries have similar laws.

Sounds illegal to me .

Yes, that is pretty straight forward, but how to catch the person(s) responsible is still the big question. It's not just finding out who, but you need to find out where they are living. It could be anywhere in the world.  :-\

But, as with most criminals, they make mistakes and I hope lulzsec makes one soon.

While I like a lot of the EVE world and game play I've decided that I just don't have time to invest in an MMO and will be letting my subscription run out. It also looks like there are a LOT of others leaving the game as well, but for different reasons. An internal email/memo was leaked to the public and a lot of the player base is in a rage right now.

http://www.evenews24.com/2011/06/22/greed-is-good-purportedly-leaked-internal-bulletin-shows-ccps-refreshing-new-direction/ (http://www.evenews24.com/2011/06/22/greed-is-good-purportedly-leaked-internal-bulletin-shows-ccps-refreshing-new-direction/)

CCP's (EVE's parent company) response: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1536065 (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1536065)

I tried to count all the threads started by people saying goodbye, but gave up after I reached 100. Not a good week for CCP.

I was curious why they were unhappy--is this about a document leak stating they're going to be adding microtransactions to Eve? And not just fluffy, stuff, but actual usable items (aka, pay-to-play)?  Man, I'd be unhappy with that myself, were I already shelling out $$ to play every month.

That's part of it, but right now the only MT is for accessories to your avatar that have no implications on game play, but cost an arm and a leg. Basically you can buy a eye piece for your avatar that does nothing for game play, but that eye piece cost more than some of the better ships in the game.

Also, one of the more popular, long time, players was banned for some reason (I haven't read up on it) and a lot of folks a pissed out that to,

Looks like there are about 50k people logged into the game right now and about 2500 of them are in that system. I've never seen this system have more than 2-300 in it.

I am at lunch and have my laptop here at work today. I just tried to login with my character that is based in the Jita system and got a message saying it is over populated right now, come back latter.

Perpetuum receives influx of EVE players

QuoteOn the Perpetuum Online forum, developer BoyC alerted players to a server load problem and at the same time welcomed the influx of players that began 48 hours prior. A login limit had to be placed on the server to balance the load, and the increased number of players trying to access the game has even highlighted a bug in the relay servers to which players connect. "The sheer number of new players caught us by surprise," said DEV BoyC, "and we're working around the clock to accommodate each and every one of you."

QuoteAnyone attacking the big-money, hurting the big-money I have no problem with.
"The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of the working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life.

Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class, take possession of the means of production, abolish the wage system, and live in harmony with the Earth."

EVE Online Player Loses A Spaceship Worth Approximately $9,000

It smarts to lose a fight in a video game. It smarts more when you're playing an MMO, where your losses are on display for your entire community to see. It smarts even more when in that fight, you lose a ship worth approximately $8-9000.

That's what happened in EVE Online the other day, developer CCP games confirms. EVE is one of the longest running and most involved MMOs on the market, where players buy, pilot and fight with starships in a massive, persistent world marked by large scale conflict between groups of players. It's been running more than a decade. In-currency can be roughly equated to real-life currency through an exchange mechanism called PLEX, and some items can get very pricey. It doesn't quite get up to the most expensive item ever sold in a video game —  one player paid about $100,000 for a space station in Entropia universe in 2010 – but it makes cows in Farmville look sheepish. The developer famously released a $60 monocle a few years ago.

The ship in question was a "Revenant Super Carrier," one of the rarest ships in the game, and, up until recently, never destroyed. The fight itself was a massive battle marked by intrigue on Shakesperean level — a well-respected player in one group turned traitor against his allies and set a trap that led the ultra-valuable ship to where it would be eventually destroyed. After the Revenant went down, nine other super-carriers followed suit. Here's a writeup on The Mittani (http://themittani.com/news/ten-pl-supercarriers-ambushed-revenant-down (http://themittani.com/news/ten-pl-supercarriers-ambushed-revenant-down)), which also has the traitor's explanation of his actions in full.

Below you can find a replay of the battle. If you, like me, don't know the ins and outs of combat in EVE online, it will be nearly impossible to follow.

A guy jokes about "blowing his head off" in chat on EVE and gets a visit from the RCMP to see if he's OK.

QuoteHey guys, so I am writing to you right now because the police literally just woke me up (4:30 am here) asking if I play an online game called EVE and that CCP games actually contacted INTERPOL (I live in Canada- that's x-country police work right there) who then contacted the RCMP who just dispatched two officers to my house because I said I "was going to blow my Chucking brains out" in Local Chat at Jita because of a loss earlier. I imagine the follow up text (body disposal, cleanup) that another player and I were openly joking about made itself to the report however the officers were kind enough to only mention the fact I had said I want to end my own life in an online video game. The officers then asked me if I have a history of self-harm, and if I had any firearms in the house (no, to both) Lesson learned here? Watch what you Chucking say in an online game! Even when you say something to somebody specifically, someone may take it out of context and get Chucking INTERPOL involved. What kind of international suicide watch list did I unintentionally end up on?
I was not expecting this to happen especially considering I haven't played EVE in about 6 hours.

In Eve I have a trading character. I have a bunch of buy and sell orders up and I check them every day to see if I need to adjust my prices up or down. I came across this sell order in my game wallet. The Missile Guidance Enhancers were up for sale at 22,000.

I happen to have the lowest price so when someone makes a mistake and places a buy order for higher than the lowest sell order I will get the sale. Worked out pretty good for me.

The buyer wasn't happy he made the mistake and emailed one word to me.

Anyway, worked out for me.  8)

http://evenews24.com/2015/08/28/first-day-of-youtube-gaming-markeedragon-gets-swatted/

QuoteAn entrepreneur in the video game industry, MarkeeDragon, has been involved in gaming as a business since 1997, when he played Ultima: Online. Before 'RMT" (Real Money Trading) was a coined phrase, MarkeeDragon discovered a loophole in Ultima's game-time codes. Selling in-game currency and items for real money was not frowned upon back in the days of Ultima: Online, and MarkeeDragon realized he could trade Ultima: Online game-time codes for gold, and then resell the gold for a profit.

QuoteMarkeeDragon found himself victim of 'Swatting', where a person calls the Police claiming that the streamer is holding someone hostage, or has killed someone, causing a SWAT team to storm the stream.  The Wikipedia definition of swatting is:

Swatting is the act of tricking emergency services into deploying an Emergency Response Team based on the false report of an ongoing critical situation
During his stream, he heard shouting in the house, he went on to say

QuoteMy house is not a shouting house, the only time anyone shouts in my house is to tell a cat to get off the counter. So I went out into the hallway to see what was happening, and as I left the room, there were officers pointing guns at me. They handcuffed me, and had me kneel outside, and they cleared the whole house. My son who was asleep, he's 22, but they handcuffed him too. Fortunately they didn't handcuff my younger children, but I spent 15 -20 minutes in handcuffs, while they figured out what was happening.  One of the officers was friends with my son, and as I went on to explain what swatting was, he agreed with me. The older officers had not heard of 'swatting'.

It all worked out ok, but someone had called the local police saying that I had killed my  wife, was holding my children hostage, and had a pipe-bomb ready to kill myself. And these weren't just handguns they were using, they were assault rifles. And things can go wrong very quickly. Fortunately, I have experience with law enforcement, and knew exactly what to do. So now the local authorities now that I stream, and troll calls may happen, and to not take them seriously. I had never considered myself being swatted before, and of course, it happens today when I am streaming to a wider audience.

http://www.twitch.tv/markeedragon/v/13137147

In the video featured, you can hear Thor, my Icelandic friend, talking about how I received a phone call 15 minutes before the police arrived at my house, and you can hear Thor say that whoever called me was probably the person responsible, making sure they had the right number. But of course, the media heard of it, and they arrived too. It was an uncomfortable evening, but it takes a lot to shake me. At least the local authorities are now aware of the issue, and hopefully it wont happen again.

Wow.  Dangerous and and resources deployed to one area are resources that can't be deployed elsewhere.

I guess the person who called in the Swat had called MarkeeDragon before to confirm his phone number. I hope they did it from their home or cell phone and get to meet the police face to face.

New? Eve has been around since 2003!

QuoteMarcus was hosting a dynamic new video game called Eve from a gaming studio in his home.

Ridley Scott linked to and Eve Online based TV show?

http://www.ruv.is/node/938565 (in Icelandic)

So many possibilities to tell a lot of good stories in the Eve universe. The Eve lore alone would make for an epic space opera, but even just telling a simple story of a Serenity type crew trying to survive could be cool. I hope this comes to fruition.

getting home was not fun. Boarded the plane at 7:55 pm and then 15 minutes latter we deplaned. Why? Some idiot tried to flush a neck pillow down the crapper and it backed the whole plumbing system up. Didn't get on a another plane until 10:50 PM (the same time my original plane was supposed to land in Seattle!!!!). It is now 3 am and I am going to try to get some sleep in my own bed.

Hey, let's have a Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1318670671/fountain-war-book) to get a military/science fiction writer to chronicle Eve Online stories; culminating with the Fountain War (http://www.gamesradar.com/eve-onlines-fountain-war-beginnings/):

I talked with the guy when I was in Vegas. He was also one of the panelist. A lot of the Eve community are butt hurt over this book. The main guy, The Mittani (in-game name), runs the in-game corporation/alliance that won the war and some people don't like him. Lots and lots of crying on Reddit about the book.

There is also another Eve book in the works (already funded).

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sciencegroen/a-history-of-the-great-empires-of-eve-online/description

This one does not have the hate attached to it that the other book has. Mostly because it does't have the most successful player in Eve as a partner and most think it will be an unbiased telling of the history of Eve.

Me? I'll read both and probably enjoy them. :)

People ask me what Eve Online is like. It's a hard question to answer, because there isn't anything to compare it to. No other game in existence has had a universe that has existed persistently since 2003 and has a history that has been forged by the people who play the game. Eve isn't a game where the developers guide you by creating content that you have to engage in to progress in the game. The content is largely created by the player base. The developers have created a sandbox and the players get to make sandcastles. They can make as many as they want and can try and control the sandbox if they want to, but they have to defend their sandcastles against others who want to kick them down and build their own. But not everyone who plays the game gets involved in the big corporations and politics of the game. Lots of players are like me and just enjoy exploring the universe and figuring out how to cut our a little niche for ourselves.

I explore, manufacture and trade. I rarely get involved in conflict, but have had ships blown up and lost billions of in-game money. It hurts because loss is permanent in Eve, but you dust yourself off, figure out what you can do to avoid what just happened and move on. Sometimes you fight back, sometimes you run. The choice is yours and that's why Eve appeals to me.

A well liked EVE player died in the San Bernardino shooting. o7

R.I.P. in peace Photon Torpedo.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments/3vclpv/rip_in_peace_photon_torpedo/

-----------------------

Robert Adams, 40

As an environmental health specialist with San Bernardino County, Robert Adams often inspected pools and food facilities during the construction phase.

Adams, 40, and his wife grew up in the Inland Empire and were high school sweethearts, said family friend Jenni Kosse. They had tried to have kids for some time, she said, and he adored their 20-month-old daughter, Savannah. He loved taking her to the park and uploaded new pictures of her to Facebook almost every night.

"When you saw the three of them together," said a distressed Kosse, "you just wanted to jump in the middle and think, 'I want to have fun too.'"

He always looked out for others. He could sense when someone was angry or frustrated, she said. He'd smile at them and ask, "How can I help you?" Almost always, Kosse said, the person's anger would melt away.

Adams — who wore bright ties and his beard in a goatee — also spent time helping his parents, who donate doves to Inland Empire families who have lost a loved one, Kosse said. They give them away for free, she said, so families can release them at ceremonies.

"To be supportive," she said, her voice quivering. By Thursday night, a fundraising page set up by friends, who said they were struggling to "make sense of what makes NO sense," had raised more than $20,000 for the widow and young daughter.

EVE is going to a model where they will have FTP and subs.

https://community.eveonline.com/news/dev-blogs/introducing-clone-states-and-the-future-of-access-to-eve-online/

I think it is interesting. I have let my subs lapse, but once they enable the FTP, I will be able to log in and play, but with a smaller set of skills. Thing is, those characters have all the FTP skills maxed out, so I will still be able to enjoy the game without paying.

You can have fun with the ships and skills in the FTP model, but the envy of people flying better ships will get a lot of the FTP players to sub.
