Title: Season 10: Big Mouth, J.Lo and the DAWG
Post by: Pearl@32 on January 19, 2011, 07:02:04 PM
The whole vibe is different. Could be a kinder, gentler Idol.

Steven Tyler, that man has a VOICE. Insane.

Cracked me up when Jenn had to give her first 'no'...I think they set her up with a bunch of good ones, then sent in the first obvious 'no'. heh. She was so cute.

How much plastic surgery has Steven had anyway? lol.

LOL...I knew that was gonna get a response! hehehhe.

Just so you know, I did add a bit of 'grits' to my mixed grain cereal the other day. hehe...with raisins and brown sugar. *yum*

I've discovered a really cool way of making healthy breakfast for us. It's using steel cut oats, groats, 5 or 10 grain mix, with either raisins, cranberries, craisins, dried strawberries....I do different mixes every time. The mix is 4 cups water in a slow cooker (I have a small one that works perfectly), to one cup of grains and as much of the fruit in what ever combo you want. The groats are really different, they are almost like a bean (whole oat grain). I want to try them with a hamhock or something! I could easily see them going savory over sweet. Anyway, it's been great having a nice warm breakfast (I noticed Tom has been eating less at lunch too). Great to eat and good for us. Num.

*but yes, my grits are still eaten SWEET!!*

Well, I thought Steve Perry was a girl the first time I heard/saw him in person! *I know I've probably told this story before, but here goes*

When I was in High School we went to a school dance. The band was local and they were very excited that one of their former band members was there from his 'new gig with his new band in SF'...'they'd just cut a record deal'...and 'he was home for a visit'. Well, the band took a break and this guy was going to come in and sing a song with the band. My friends and I were in the lobby and we hear the band starting back up, I hear this singing, and I said to my friend, 'I thought they said it was a GUY who was going to sing?'...we walked to the door and looked into the darkened gym...there was this super skinny, really long haired guy up there sounding just like a girl!. Yep. Steve Perry. He's from my old hometown. We went to the same HS, a few years apart of course. heh.

He had a maturity in his manner and bearing too. I like how Jen said something to the effect of 'we could have just discovered him'.

Then...the last little 15 yr old...she's right that little girl is gonna get eaten alive in that competition. But, she'll at least be able to say she went to Hollywood, and hopefully she'll learn and grow and come back. What's the rule? If they get cut in Hollywood w/o going onto the show itself they can come back, or something.

Ok, I just watched the 10 best tearjerking moments in the photo gallery on ew.com (toward the bottom at http://www.ew.com/ew/package/0,,20312226,00.html (http://www.ew.com/ew/package/0,,20312226,00.html)) and omg, totally teared up after finding a YouTube of Chris Medina's audition. Nice job! Sad to see the proposal though. You know, Steven Tyler might be crazy and look crazy, but he has got a huge heart. I never forgot how he and Joe Perry visited one of the kids who got shot in the Columbine shooting.

I wish I could say I've kept up with the show, but I haven't.

OK, not understanding who they're choosing and letting go but they've got some kind of crazy "winner's got to be jack of all trades" criteria.

The more important thing is we are in the middle of a J. Lo meltdown and that's all that matters.   Let's make the show about her!

I don't watch it either, but the radio dudes were going on and on and on about it. Apparently J-Lo had a breakdown after kicking some guy to the curb and sobbed hysterically forever.

If I knew the radio dudes were going to talk about it for more than 30 seconds, I would have changed stations.

I think I might be taking a time out on this year. To be honest, last year was a bit painful and while I liked a lot of people from last year, I just think it's gotten crazy. I mean, James (?) Durbin totally ripped off Adam Lambert's fantastic performance of "A Change is Gonna Come" for his final performance in front of the judges. I'm sure on some level Adam would be flattered, because he ripped off a lot of people, too. And he wasn't the only one: David Cook and Chris Daughtry did so as well. I think I'm just getting bored with Idol. It's a glorified karaoke contest ~ even though they allow the playing of instruments now and many contestants performed original songs for their finals, that's not the way it's going to go for the competition. I don't know. I guess I'm just getting tired of the ripoff and seeing what they think is talent get on the show.

My time might be best spent doing art and watching Netflix.

PS. You can also see in the opening credits instead just showing the winners they're showing runner-ups. THAT is a first. I guess Jennifer Hudson's Oscar and Daughtry music sales changed their tune. Now with the X Factor on the way, do we really care? Like my Idol buddy says, bring on So You Think You Can Dance!

This season is OK. There are only a few that I like, but it's more for their quirkiness than their singing ability. One that I did like for her signing was Pia and she got voted off after having an amazing performance last week. Everyone was shocked. She probably had the best "voice" of anyone left on the show and I seriously thought should be be standing at the end. Well, seems folks in the industry seem to think the same thing apparently.

Scotty McCreery has an amazing country western singing voice. I heard him for the first time today when
I clicked on some of them on You Tube. Wow! For a 16 year old that voice will go far.  Of all of them I've
heard I think he will be the one to make it even if he doesn't win. Casey Abrams is good too but might not
have the commercial appeal that I think Scotty has. That deep country western voice is a throwback to some
of the greats of the past with deep voices.

If anything Casey or Jacob should have been gone before Pia, who really deserved to be at least Top 5. The problem I had with her is that she was a dead ringer for Celine Dion, which is an amazing feat in and of itself — the pipes! — but who wants to be the second Celine?

I wanted to like Casey, but his performance of Smells like Teen Spirit was C-R-A-P (plus scary) and to me he hasn't sounded good since Hollywood. They thought that Casey's JAZZ performance of "Nature Boy" was "brilliant" and "genius," are you serious.

Randy says we need art? Supposedly all the music industry (and ultimately the public) really needs is Britney Spears, Ke$ha and Rihanna with a splice of Eminem. (Thank God for independent labels.)

Scotty was born to be a C&W singer. Just not a huge fan of that kind of singing and bravado. I can only take so much of it. (I think I like female country singers better than males. Maybe more pop-sounding. But I do like Patsy Cline, very much so!)

I've liked Lauren from the beginning, but James surprised the HECK out of me. I was put off by his copying Adam Lambert, but his performances have been vocally very interesting and he's shown range.

I miss David Cook.

Our Fox Morning News affiliate was in Newark, NJ for The X Factor auditions. The winner gets 5 MILLION DOLLARS. WHAT?!  When was the last time ANYBODY on IDOL worth THAT?! Kelly & Carrie? Wow, 5 million. Of course, if you win, they got you.  >:D

Scotty's voice is a throwback to the deep voiced C&W singers of the past like Cash, Haggard, Travis and one
other whose name I can't think of right now.  I like that type of country singer and yes he was born to be one
and will make it even if he doesn't win.  I can see the labels salivating now to sign him up. He's so young and
will only get better with age and country western singers if good have a long life.  From the ones I've listened
to, he's the only one I like a lot. Casey is second.

Some of them I don't understand why they are still there or why they ever got there I should say.  That
squirrly blond guy with the ratty hair that has the vocals of a wimp and can't quit smiling annoys me to no
end. He had one good song when he sounded like a weak Rod Stewart but that is it.

I loved David Cook too.

Cook is supposed to have a new album out this year.

Scotty is so Travis. I just wish he didn't do the smile / head tilt thing so damn much!

There were like 2 other contestants from the top Hollywood picks that I thought deserved to be there. There was a 15 or 16 year old girl that was really good, and they'd like to see her try out again (Hollie Cavanagh). The last two guys, although I liked the red-haired guy, I liked the other one better (Colton Dixon).

I really don't watch the show so I haven't seen everyone who has performed. I just click on You Tube spots

So he's not the wholesome church boy he's been leading people to believe he is.

QuoteLusk was caught riding a Los Angeles train without buying a ticket in 2009. After not showing up to his court appearance for the infraction, a warrant was issued for his arrest. And when he was pulled over for a traffic violation in November, he was arrested and thrown in jail.

Just been listening to a few more of the Idol spots on You Tube. James Durbin is a WOW!! My goodness
what a voice. A marvelous range. I hadn't listened to him before but he is good.  Every time I look at him
though I keep wanting to kick his mom for not having his ears fixed.  He had enough of a handicap
growing up I imagine with the Tourettes without being teased about the ears too.

James is my pick to win the show. He not only sings/performs well, but he seems to be soaking up all the knowledge he can from all the talented folks made available to him and the other contestants. He seems to be the only one who knows who he wants to be after the show and not only who he wants to be, but how he wants to do it. And even if he doesn't win the show, he will win the show, because he will be the most successful person from the season IMO.

ETA: a shorter version is that he has "It" and gets "It".

I can't say I was all that excited about David Cook's new song ~ but I still like him as a singer.

I think this is still my favorite of his performances, even though there are so many (Hello, Billie Jean, Always Be My Baby).

I wasn't wild about the new song either. He does better with other songs already written that have
become hits. He puts his own spin on them and makes them his own.

The first single from his self-titled album, "Light On," had to grow on me, but I loved "Come Back to Me" straight away. I listened to his CD Analog Heart on the Internet, and while it was sold briefly on Amazon, I'd have to check for it now, but I don't think it's available anywhere. I fell in love with one of the songs ("Searchlights") and I downloaded a copy, but didn't download any others (just couldn't do that to him).

His voice on the recording of the new song is very good though. He just sounded a little off at first the other night on Idol.

I've been listening to some of his old performances on Idol and they were so good. I can't believe he
seems to have faded. A voice like that should be out there. I bet Scotty McCreery will go farther then
David. Country western singers seem to take care of their own and help to bring them out.

The only male Idol contestant to have some decent success is Chris Daughtry, and rightly so ~ Daughtry's songs were very commercial and perfect for Top 40, even Adult Contemporary radio. (runners up: Constantine, Clay, Ruben, Adam) The males may have dominated the competition, but the females have truly garnered more exposure and success (Kelly, Carrie, Jennifer H., Jordin, even Fantasia on the R&B). Maybe it is hard to make it in the music business even with a decent contract.

Scotty will do even better than Josh Gracin, Bucky Covington and Danny Gokey. He'll probably give Carrie a ride for her money!

Cook needs better song writers. He's got the voice.  Scotty is set no doubt about it. Country music hasn't
had a deep voiced country singer that young in a looooong time and he's good. Casey is wearing thin for me
but Durbin is really good too.

She is soooo incredibly good. When she sang "The House of the Rising Sun" last week I couldn't quit playing
it.  I was twixt and tween between Durbin and Scotty but Haley's voice is just in a whole other realm. Scotty
has it made with country. He will be a star no matter win or lose and Durbin has a personal story that gets
to your heart but Haley should win.

I keep listening to last nights performance. Probably over ten times today. I agree that her voice is probably the best left and, sadly, it will come down to Scotty or James for the final. I think Scotty is good, but I don't think he should get the title. Right now I think Haley is my favorite, but I wouldn't be sad if James won it all. Poor Lauren, she has confidence issues and it's sad. If she could get over them, I am sure she could belt out a performance on par with Haley's. Also, while I am not a Gaga fan, she had Lauren pegged.

I just listen to the performances on YouTube so I don't know what Gaga said.  I suspect because of the
female teen vote one of the guys will get it but Haley has to have one of the most amazing voices that
have been on there in a long time. Interesting that she tried out last year and didn't make it. With the
lack of talent last year she might have been able to walk away with it however we saw the teen girls
once again last year blow the finale.

James is wonderful sometimes but not all of the time. He chooses bad songs trying to be two different
performers.  Haley seems to know who she is and what her voice can do.  Lauren needs to mature.

Haley fixes up older, looks and acts more mature. I would have thought she was a little older. Lauren is
still a little girl with a big voice, so is Scotty as a kid with a big voice but his personality is more mature then
hers. His stage presence needs work but if he just sits in front of a mike and sings he's pretty wonderful.

U2, Lady Gaga to Perform on 'American Idol' Finale
Spoiler alert! THR has the lowdown on who will duet with Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina Wednesday night.

If part one of the American Idol finale left you a little underwhelmed, season 10's two-hour second act shows much more promise, if not for the duets alone.

THR has learned of some very interesting pairings in store for tonight's show, airing live from L.A.'s Nokia Theater. In addition to previously reported collaborations (Jack Black with Casey Abrams, Beyonce with the Top 13 girls), Lauren Alaina will have the distinct honor of trading verses with her very own idol, Carrie Underwood, as will Scotty McCreery with country superstar Tim McGraw.

And in what are bound to be two standout moments that don't involve the final two, James Durbin will take the stage with iconic metal outfit Judas Priest (he sang the band's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" during the Top 24), and Haley Reinhart, who some thought might get a stay of elimination on Tuesday night, will have her moment with Tony Bennett. Serendipitously, the legendary jazz crooner is gearing up for the release of a forthcoming duets album. In addition, ladies man Tom Jones will appear with the Top 13 guys.

While Fox will not confirm or comment on any prospective bookings, it's been long rumored that both judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez will perform on the show, the former pushing his first ever solo single and the latter likely hyping her single "On the Floor," currently No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Sources tell THR Lopez will indeed take the stage, but it won't be alone, and multiple blogs report that Aerosmith's "Dream On" was heard during rehearsal on Tuesday.

Backstage in the press room after the performance show, Tyler would only say that a guitar will be on hand Wednesday should he "choose to play it." As for whether the singer will be joined by his Aerosmith bandmates? The jury's still out. Worth noting: it wouldn't be Joe Perry's first time on the Idol stage. The guitarist played The Kinks "You Really Got Me" with Sanjaya Malakar during the Season 6 finale.

The Interscope contingent will include Lady Gaga (performing "Edge of Glory") and U2's Bono and the Edge (performing a song from the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), and there looks to be one more surprise by an unexpected twosome: the surviving members of TLC.

As with everything Idol, all is subject to last-minute change.

Stoked yet?       Tune in to Fox tonight at 8 p.m.  for all the action.

I must say while Lady Gaga confuses the hell out of me (well not that much, she's just annoying and copying Madonna) I do like her "Edge of Glory" song, even if it is reminiscent of "My Life Would Suck Without You" by Kelly Clarkson. Gaga says she wrote it, though I think she's listened to too much music. Lots of people commented how "Born This Way" was akin to Madonna's "Express Yourself," but it reminds me of TLC's "Waterfalls." "Poker Face" will always be my favorite song of hers.

Dial Idol has projected that Scotty was at the top spot the whole season.

Dial Idol scoring:  Scotty 19.356 to Lauren 11.286.

The night Pia was voted off? Dial Idol had her at number 3 with the most busy signals.

eta: DI had Chris Daughtry as last the night he went home.

Also, there is no question that AI wants Lauren to win. I missed the beginning that Scotty won the coin toss and gave the choice to Lauren anyway. I just want to know whose idea was it for Lauren to hug her mom during her performance. So contrived and maybe voters thought it was too.

We were down in NC last week and he is definitely the "favorite son". Everywhere we went there were signs
up cheering him along and telling people to vote for him. My friends are not big TV viewers and they were
glued to the set last week when AI was on.  I don't know which was louder, the cheers for Scotty or the cicadas.

When I first heard him on You Tube I thought there is the winner if pure raw natural talent was the criteria.
He wasn't the best entertainer or showy but a voice like that doesn't come around that often, one in a million.
He had it made the minute he opened his mouth at that audition. :)

On a lighter note. I went to the movies this morning and saw X-Men: First Class. When it was over I went out of one of the back door of the theater and ran into Stefano and his entourage. They have an out door stage out front of the theater and apparently he was doing a meet and greet with his hometown fans. I happened on his staging area. Seems like a nice kid. I shook his hand and said hi. He very short though. I'd say he'd he may be 5' 6'' with shoes on.
