There is a reason Hollywood week is called "Hell Week." It is learning songs overnight (if you don't already know them) and working with a group ON A REAL STAGE. Even Jennifer Hudson forgot the words during Hollywood week.

There are quite a few contestants who are definitely going home. If Bikini Girl makes it through, I'll be a monkey's uncle aunt. My co-worker is dumbfounded why contestants still use all the stupid gimmicks and costumes. It's Season 8 and everybody should know what it takes to get you to Hollywood. Just stand there and sing!

They have a talented bunch already, and they haven't even finished showing us all the cities yet.

I'm thankful for less drama though. I'm sick of seeing people being pissed off because THEY can't figure out they can't sing.

The guy with the two cheer leaders might have had a chance if he hadn't had what appeared to be (in the words of my girls) his 'fag hags' with him. Sorry, but the presentation was so over the top, and his voice wasn't that bad.

Oh well.

Hopefully they will try to screen out the crazies...one gal killing herself over Paula Abdul is enough. *course they did let the 'fan' of the new gal through already. *shudder*

When she gets to Hollywood, she's gonna have her bikini-clad butt handed to her on a platter. At least she appears to have a future in porn.

What kind of parents allowed her to (as the girls say) 'tute herself like that?

Well, she is twenty years old (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article5516181.ece) ...

Exactly. But good parenting is supposed to last into adulthood. By the time she is she 20, she should still be young enough to remember all her parents taught her, and be smart enough to know what her actions say about her.

My point stands.

Of course, these are my values I'm applying here, other's have the right to see it otherwise.

I was just stating that it was highly unlikely that her parents could allow or not allow their twenty-year-old to sing in her bikini on TV.

Last night seemed very rushed and confusing and the fact that they let that one totally wacked out crazy girl through scares the heck outta me!

They usually don't even let us see (through clever editing) the really GOOD singers till later anyway. We'll see. I liked the one young windower, although I don't like how he seems somehow fake when he talks about it. I'm sorry if it's true, but I almost get a 'Johnny Fairplay' vibe off him.

I'm sorry some of the good ones with good stories didn't get through, but you could still see the spirit was still in 'em.

They are still keeping some nuts to make for good 'entertainment', which is alway a shame, since they get rid of good singers for them.

I was/am surrised that the Osmond and the Castro boys did not go through.

That almost makes me not want to watch it. Tatiana is a piece of work.

I like Lil Rounds (the mom with three kids), Danny Gorky (the soulful guy who lost his wife) and Michael Sarver (oil rig guy). There are others I was impressed with, but I can't put faces with performances yet. I liked Donyelle (?) the girl that was/grew up (?) homeless.

Poor David Cook looks like Big Boy with the pointed hair. Just don't look right.

I am totally shocked at some of the people they sent through and some they cut. They MUST see/hear more than we do with all the editing and such. And you can tell by some of the little snippets that they have much more interaction with the kids than we see on camera.

The guy who 'lost his wife' just seems so insincere to me. I get suspicious then either feel really guilty when/if I find I was wrong, or really gloaty if I'm right.

I just got the feeling that it was a made up story, showing the two guys who were 'best friends' with the one guy being there to 'back up his friend all the way'. I think they thought that would get them through. So did the other contestants by the sounds of things.

Jessi and I were so mean...we figured they were a couple and the 'dead wife' was a made up story that didn't work.

Forgive me if I insult or offend...just the first thing that came into my mind when he first started talking.

Also, they put through those two really whacked out guys and that loud annoying crazy girl. What the? This is not the 'entertainment value' I'd hoped for. *they said they were going to classy it up a bit....guess they just meant the rented 'mansion'?*

I watched the auditions sporadically so I did miss a lot of stuff, and drama that I didn't really need to see. Competition brings out the best and worst in people. The fact that they spend extra time getting footage from home is a bit creepy. But I guess that's reality TV. A lot of people on reality TV are actors. It's the sad truth.

I don't think any of the contestants, ones who made it and ones who didn't, have a clue of what they're getting into.

They even asked her, with all her past 'deal's, why did she think she never made it? Simon said something about...'they never gave her a chance'...then let her through. Sick.

They play, they let people through who should NOT be there, and kick out those who are obviously more talented. The first two kids they had do a 'sing off' were equally talented, and the one kid was alot cuter...he'd have been a 'teen idol' type fave for sure. But he got cut.

They let that one guy go through who actually got up and left the stage in the middle of his set! I seriously think too much attention is placed on 'balance'. They have to have that 'diversity'...it's so stupid. They'll keep a crappy sounding blond, because they already have too many 'girls of color' or vice-versa. The other 'sing off' with the two blonds was stupid. They should have kept them both and kick off (and institutionalized) that ditzy insane girl (but she is dark and exotic looking...and obviously good for ratings).

UGH!

I hope Anoop gets in the competition via wild card. Liked him a lot.

The problem I have with a new season is I'm always comparing the new contestants to the old ones. The guy who sang "A Song for You" (Ricky Braddy) was in just in a different range than Elliott Yamin's performance 3 years ago. Elliott has a tone to his voice that is just smooth and deeper. And I've witnessed Bo Bice (S4) singing "I Don't Wanna Be" live so you gotta bring it if you're going to be impress me. Michael Sarver did a reputable job, but nothing special. (I"m sooooo biased. Can't help it, I loved Season 4.)

I think what bothers me so much is that both Paula and Simon don't even try to hide who they KNOW is going to 'win'. I haven't believed this thing is 'the audience choosing' since the beginning....Little blond girl and 'dead wife guy' are gonna go to the final top three at least.

I could also see the way the split the groups into 12, they already rigged that so that their faves weren't up against each other too much.

I don't even bother voting anymore...I think it's just out of habit that I even watch.

So glad they got rid of mentally ill girl!!

Yeah, him.

I'm sorry, but I just could NOT believe that he was a '4 weeks passed widower' at his first audition, and his 'best friend' who went on to Hollywood too was 'just his friend'...I know, I know, my evil mind again. But last night, a different guy sitting with 'best friend guy' was holding a pic of the 'couple' and he appeared to have been crying.

Seriously though. Did he act like a mourning (only FOUR weeks) husband when we first saw him audition?

I dunno. They do witness the rehearsals and formulate their thoughts before the live show (we saw that with Paula last year). But there are too many times where they have predicted contenders and they've fallen flat on their faces. They thought David Archuleta was a shoe-in (I know I did) ~ all you have to do is listen to the voice ~ but David Cook proved he had something to offer. He became the forerunner on the nights he sung "Eleanor Rigby" and "Billie Jean."

Simon was a judge for a UK competition show on which Leona Lewis was a contestant and he sang her praises every week. And she deserved it: she picked the right songs ~ they happened to be some of the most challenging songs to sing ~ "Loving You," "Without You," and "The First thyme Ever I Saw Your Face" ~ and she sung them flawlessly. (I YouTubed.)

Kelly Clarkson was not a frontrunner from the beginning, but in the weeks where they were performing on the big stage, she was proving herself.

They were plenty of people in whom the judges had great faith since Hollywood week and they just didn't perform well. Do I think the judges have an unfair bias on the voting? You bet! But think about this: Taylor Hicks had a lot of fans. Simon didn't like him from the beginning, and I don't know if he ever really won him over. Chris Daughtry was the frontrunner, and surprise, he got voted out. Taylor had the talent; he just wasn't "Idol material." Chris had the most success after Idol; his band's CD went multi-platinum and he is radio-friendly. I haven't bought his CD because I hear him on the radio all the thyme. And I would, he's got great songs.

I think it's still America's vote...with a bit of influence. ;)
Title: Re: new season starts tonight...
Post by: Saxon on February 19, 2009, 02:16:50 PM
I never understood the appeal of Taylor Hicks...he made me sick just to watch him....he's the main reason I stopped voting and watch as regularly.

I know there is alot of editing during he pre-lems, and they try to spot light who they think will shine....but boy, some of them are treated like they've already won.

I though it was a hoot that they already booted that one gal who'd had a couple other 'recording deals' and quietly replaced her.

I think the reason David Cook was the winner was because, for me he was more marketable/talented...and also because he'd already won some other (Star Search) comepetition and I think they were legally covering their butts.

Lots' of behind the scenes stuff going on..it is 'Show Biz' after all.
Title: Re: new season starts tonight...
Post by: Pearl@32 on February 20, 2009, 07:31:37 AM
Both Davids (Cook and Archuleta) are extremely marketable. Win-win for Idol!

Archuleta hit the airwaves first with "Crush," which is a very nice debut. Archuleta was the one who won Star Search's junior vocal competition in 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Archuleta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Archuleta)). Cook got local accolades for Analog Heart, his only solo release prior to Idol, and released 4 independent CDs with Axium (the band he co-founded in high school).

/I know too much about these people.

Post by: Saxon on February 20, 2009, 11:44:40 AM
I think that is why 'working man' went through. From exactly what Simon said, "YOU are what this competition is supposed to be about...' *can't remember exact quote* but he was talking about taking a regular joe, not a person who'd already been 'discovered'...someone 'off the street', or from 'out of the field'....not a person with prior successes.

I agree. When I hear that they'd already had something recorded and they 'didn't make it'...I figure they've had their chance. Let the little guys through.

Feel that way about Survivor too. This year one guy is already a millionaire! And one gal is the wife of a famous football player and has her own successful business. Why are they even on there? Good grief. I think the black gal already realizes she's cut her own throat cuz she couldn't resist basking in the adulation of the guys who knew who her husband was.

Then, on Amazing Race...one team are professional stunt men brothers! How unfair is that? And then the guy who wrote 'School of Rock' is there with is successful author father. Why?

Give the little (POOR) people a chance at fame and/or fortune...

Almost seems like having connections or an agent helps one to get on these shows. There are also actors who "try out" for these shows, too. But then, reality has been popular and they need to pay the bills like anybody else. Doesn't help the real actors who want to work on a non-reality show and the average regular people who want a chance, too. I think one of the reasons why I don't play the lottery is if I won I wouldn't want my face plastered everywhere and your compliance in the lottery using your likeness is required should you win.

Isn't that scary? You'd be 'known' by every crazy in town...your kids are now targetted for kidnapping...scammers will try to get into 'fender benders' with you. And I don't think I'm being paranoid. Has anyone else been getting an unsual amount of telemarketers calling using the catch phrases of 'bailout' and other words bandied about on tv? I'm sure they are trying to get personal info on people to get them to 'refinance' or whatever and really they are gonna take 'em for what they can. I called my own mortgage company and asked about a refi, since we just did (to consolidate) and the fact that home values have dropped, it would not be worth it for us to do a refi...ONLY if they interest rate fell down under 3%, AND the home values started rising (which usually don't go together). So, all those calls, to me, are vultures trying to pick the carcasses of those who fell for the lies they heard (and are still hearing) about how dire our condition is.

Reviving the Idle thread   *clear*

Only two more nights till we know the Top 12.

Tuesday 3/3 was a good night, probably the best of the three groups. There were some exceptions... Some of them just frightened me. The quirky young dude who sang "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues."  Unfortunately, only three proceed. I liked the first guy, Ju'Not (and NOT because he's from MD!), and Lil Rounds.

Tonight is results night, tomorrow last chance, I mean, Wild Card.
Title: Re: new season starts tonight...
Post by: Saxon on March 04, 2009, 10:36:17 AM
Lil Rounds looked, and acted like a professional. If I'd just 'tuned in' I'd have thought she was an established pop singer.

The gal who got called back when the other 'had contracts, produced and failed' gal was dropped, was better than the one she replaced. Sounds so political...seriously.

Yeah, seeing/hearing some of those kids makes me wonder just how bad some of the others were....or if maybe the judges were just having a bad day. I was like WHY is that kid even there?

I'll be so glad to  see some of them GONE....only, I'm thinkin' some of the stinkers are good for controversy and might get brought back for the 'drama' factor. *ugh*

Thank the LORD!!!!!!!

We have a final 12, wait.........13! (whut??)

They decided to give Anoop another semi-heart attack tonight and give him a third chance by making it a Top 13 this year! (whaattt??)  If I were him, I would have been like, "what are you trying to do to me?!"

Now you KNOW all those other contestants are miffed. Especially Tatiana. I don't know if the making it 13 was all that fair, but hey, rules these days seem made to be rewritten. But whooo, Miss Tat needs to take Paula's slight joke and channel her theatrics into acting. And therapy. I thought *I* freaked out. I agreed with Simon 110%: his response to she couldn't find a better song than "Saving All My Love" (what she sang 2 weeks ago in Group 1): "rubbish." Don't be lazy, step it up.

However it did get a mite bit creepy with the whole knees joke from Ryan. These people are so bored. If this show lasts past 10 seasons and NOT have new judges, I'd be surprised.

So in Ryan Seacrest voice: "America, here is your TOP 13!"

Alexis Grace, 21
Danny Gokey, 28
Michael Sarver, 27
Allison Iraheta, 16
Kris Allen, 23
Adam Lambert, 26
Lil Rounds, 23
Scott MacIntyre, 23
Jorge Nuñez, 20
Jasmine Murray, 16
Megan Joy Corkrey, 22
Matt Giraud, 23
Anoop Desai, 21

If you notice, all through this thing they'd kept finding reasons to keep her in. I really thought they were going to put her through to the top 12 (13?).

They LIKE it when someone 'disrupts' the show. She just makes me feel ill...I was sure she wasn't even going to be going to Hollywood.

Instead of her in the wild card, they should have given one of the others one more chance to shine. I liked that little country singer who wore yellow the last time she sang...and Ju'not...oh well.

I think they are indulging the blind guy, I think he's a good singer and all, and they did some very creative choreography with him, but there is no way he can take part in the 'tour' that is alway alot of movement/dance. *shrug* Who knows.

I don't watch American Idle but I do listen to some You Tube spots when I see someone praised on the news.
I listened to Adam Lambert this morning with his rendition of "Black and White" and all I can say is "Wow".
What struck me the most however was how much he looks like a young version of Elvis. He has the same nose
and eyes and of course coloring. I wonder if they will do any of Elvis's songs, the comparison would be interesting
although his voice is quite a bit higher. He looks younger than 27.

Adam L. *is* different ~ he screams a lot. And I listen to a lot of artists who scream. He reminds me of the guy who won Rock Star: Supernova.

Many of the forerunners were "okay" last night and some of the weaker ones were really great. Poor Anoop dropped the ball big thyme. He is definitely going home.

They could do Elvis songs this year. They haven't revisited them since Season 5.

Did you see Alexis Grace's performance of "Lady Diana"? Holy moley! She needs to get away from the black wardrobe though.

That was the only thing I've heard him sing and I thought it was great but it could have been just that one
song. I haven't listened to anyone else. His looks just struck me as being so much like Elvis. Read comments
that he was gay but don't know if that is true. I will probably listen to You tube videos when they get down
more. I really can't watch these kind of shows, I seem to have a phobia on watching reality shows of any kind.

I don't like that one as well and it looks like he realizes the resemblance with Elvis because he did a lot
of looks and sneers typical of him. His voice is too high on this one couldn't watch it all.

I didn't even watch all of the show last night, but caught up on the Internet tonight.

I don't know that anyone does ANYTHING original anymore.

Adam performed an Indian-influenced version of "Ring of Fire" last night, and it wasn't bad. It was ~weird~ but it kinda worked for him.

Problem is Dilana, a contestant on Rockstar: Supernova, performed the song with that same Indian influence 3 years ago.

I think the song arrangement was the same; his vocals were much more melodic than hers, which were low-key and subdued.

This has been going on for seasons now, and the lackluster is just getting to me. David Cook performed more than one song by taking a cue from other cover versions ("Billie Jean" by Chris Cornell and "Daytripper" by Whitesnake, complete with talk box). It was a let-down last year to find out at least half of the contestants had recorded albums.

But what are the Idols doing BUT singing covers every week?

In the history of cover songs, some are fantastic and surpass the original, but others fall flat and sound horrible. I guess it's good that singers like David and Adam have decent voices, and sometimes change up their vocals to suit their styles.

I don't know why I'm getting all bent out of shape when all artists do covers -- I mean, I have more than 20 Idol performances on my iPod and probably over a hundred when it's all said and done.

I think mostly I've had enough of Idol contestants doing rip-off performances and the judges not knowing they ARE rip-offs -- or what's most, not caring. Idol is just one big recording contract audition to them.

Then don't say "It was original" or "It was unique."

It just makes me wonder: does anybody do anything original anymore, in anything?

Last year was sooooooooooooooo good! the year before Gingi was home, and it was our one 'girlie' addiction, with all three of us loving it. We even drove down and watched one of the tapings. She would have loved last year, but was working and didn't even have a tv. It will be fun if she's still home when this season airs, hope they have some good peeps we can love.

Bird Lady is gone! Yay!

I really wanted to like Megan Joy, but she was just too weird.

After looking at Dial Idol's website yesterday, she was consistently in the bottom, but strangely, never was in the bottom 3 until last night. Hmmm, how does that happen I wonder.   I firmly believe that they gave her another chance after her abysmal rendition of "For Once in My Life." She should have been in the bottom 3 last week, not Matt. Her poor song choices drive home the NECESSITY to pick songs that help you shine. The only people that are having some kind of consistency are Danny, Adam, Lil and Allison (except for last night). I didn't think she sang bad. It's like she was in the bottom 3 more for what she wore than how she sang, and that's just wrong.

The theme this week was Popular iTunes downloads ~ it wasn't limited to current popularity, which pissed me off a little. Then don't say popular. The group song of "Don't Stop Believin'" was pretty cool though. For a 28-year-old song, DSB is consistently in the Top 100 iTunes downloads. That's for real, I've seen it myself and was floored that people just gotta have their Journey. (Never mind it's one of my absolute favorites.)

Next week: Songs from the year you were born.

So I watched Castle during commercial breaks... didn't miss much. Anoop was all right; Danny, Allison and Adam were the best of the night. LOVED Allison's voice control. Perfect. I don't know what kind of crack they were on with what they said about Matt. I think he's good, but didn't care for the laid-back "Part Time Lover" performance. Yawn. Lil was disappointing, but I think she can bring it, if she stays another week. But after seeing Adam perform "Mad World," I'd be surprised if he doesn't win.

The dark horse sang better last night, and he deserved to win. Go Kris!

~ Adam's best performance was "A Change is Gonna Come." That was really good. The rest, eh. Honestly, there's only so much yelling one can take, and he looked like he was trying out for Blade 2 with that long coat.

~ All of Kris's performances were above average. I thought he did justice to "What's Going On," and he NAILED the Season 8 finale song, "No Boundaries." I couldn't get a sense of the song when Adam sang it, but the song was perfect for Kris.

I didn't get a chance to watch the whole thing ~ I heard it though (I can't see my co-worker's TV from my desk without leaning). I've never heard so many stars coming out to play in my life! Idol should be called: Whatchu pimpin'?

Well that's over. Now So You Think You Can Dance starts tomorrow night. Yay. <golf clap>  (loved last year though)
