Title: TWD: Season 4
Post by: Eric on October 13, 2013, 08:02:28 PM
I missed much of season three, but the previews for four looked interesting so we watched the premiere.

Generally, I found it to be an interesting episode.  There's just one part that really bugs me, and it's the part that literally as a joke around the writers' table.
Zombie rain.
Hopefully, this season will be as good as this episode. I really have a love/hate relationship with this show but this worked for me.

BTW, The Talking Dead featured the new showrunner as well and Nathan Fillion. Worth watching, for a change.

Premiere gets a vote for grossest but most effective special effect: the zombie whose goopy scalp came off as it was getting up. Hon. mention: Daryl's step-zombie.

Record Breaker (http://variety.com/2013/tv/news/walking-dead-draws-a-whopping-16-1-million-in-return-1200724179/):

'The Walking Dead' Draws Record 16.1 Million Viewers

AMC's "The Walking Dead," basic cable's biggest series of all time, opened its fourth season Sunday with more record numbers.

Despite facing higher-rated sports competition this year from both football and postseason baseball, "Walking Dead" returned Sunday with a monster average audience of 16.1 million viewers — more than 5 million viewers better than last year's 10.87 million and more than double where it kicked off its second season in October 2011 (7.26 million).

It also did a huge 8.2 rating in adults 18-49, making it easily the top-rated entertainment series telecast of the season, ahead of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" (5.5 for its season premiere and a 6.1 for a special second episode right after it).

In adults 25-54, its 7.3 rating ties with the regular-timeslot episode of "NCIS" as the season's best for an entertainment series.  (The second "Big Bang" did an 8.0).

The previous series high for "Dead" — and the all-time best for a cable series — was its third-season finale last spring, which drew 12.42 million and a 6.4 rating in adults 18-49.

By comparison, AMC's "Breaking Bad" wrapped its run last month with an average audience of 10.28 million and a 5.3 rating in adults 18-49 — easily the best scores for this series.

AMC also scored with post-show "The Talking Dead," which drew a series-record 5.1 million viewers and a 2.6 rating in adults 18-49.

I can't embed it, but AMC has released the full episode online (http://www.amctv.com/full-episodes/the-walking-dead/2742230910001/30-days-without-an-accident).
(The full the Talking Dead episode (http://www.amctv.com/full-episodes/talking-dead/2742100896001/talking-dead-on-30-days-without-an-accident) is online too, but requires logging into your cable company)

Also, Torrentfreak released some interesting numbers (http://torrentfreak.com/pirates-jump-on-the-walking-dead-despite-legal-options-131014/).  500,000 worldwide downloaded the episode when it became available on the torrent site.  The largest number of d/lers were in the USA despite, as posted above, that the episode can be watched for free through AMC.com.

Would have preferred a deluge of zombies falling through one big hole and then scattered showers .
;)

Overall I was cool with this ep .
( was excited to see Kerry Condon , was bummed when she offed herself )
What's the disease that took out Harry Potter ?

'cause that's just gotta suck ...

I kept wondering why all those spots decided to get week all at the same time. the walkers had been walking around up there for who knows how long and some how they avoided the week spots, but just all of a sudden they all started hitting the weeks spots.  ???

IIRC, the first spongy weak area was avoided (for whatever reason) until the liquor shelf collapsed on D the alcoholic medic. The walkers headed that way hearing the noise and the first soft area collapsed and it pretty much cascaded at that point.

I'm fanwanking it to be that the zombies were non-active until the scavenger party disturbed them .
I also imagined that they were on the roof waiting to be rescued before the chopper crashed and then simply succumbed to starvation .

They could have done just about anything to make that scene more realistic.  It was the "weak" part of the episode, IMO.  Enjoyed the rest quite a bit.

It's all good until we find out they blew money on building this set that they could have spent better elsewhere.
And yes, this was the scene that was actually created from a joke at the writers' table.

That scene reminded me of playing Fallout 3. There is a supermarket that you have to loot for a mission and there are bad guys around every corner.

A long, but worthwhile read on the some of the behind the scenes stuff concerning Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and the future of AMC.

The Walking Dead is free to take wild creative chances, reboot itself every season, or — and this is, sadly, more likely — do nothing much at all. There had been reports that AMC had backed Robert Kirkman, the creator of the original TWD comic series, in his backroom power struggles with more experienced film and TV hands Frank Darabont and Glen Mazzara, leading to Scott Gimple being named the series' third showrunner in four years. This latest change gave me nightmarish visions of fanboy indulgence allowed to run amok, but the first two episodes of the new season are actually the strongest the series has managed in years.

Decent episode, though ever since at least season two I've gotten the feeling the creators view us like zombies and think feeding us more blood/gore will sate the masses. YMMV.

Early on ( especially S2 Farmland Boogaloo ) watchers complained about the lack of zombie action , now on Fark I'm seeing complaints of too much zombie action . Internet is never satisfied . Film at eleven .

;)

Clearly it is time to fire this showrunner. The show is getting too good.

My only complaint is the zombie head stomp like they were cantaloupes or something. Seems to me the skull should have more resistance than that. Call Mythbusters!

Oh, I have no doubt the that after season two the creators are handing out what they think the masses want.

Well , we can have realistic crush resistant skulls or we can have blood/brain-spatter porn .
But we can't have both .

O.M.G. JUST when you think it can't get any worse, it's like a garbage chute that moves. Even Talking Dead was depressed! (They left out a lot of snark.) I don't know why I never saw it coming. So horrifying.

Turned on the tv to rewatch some of the eps before the finale...I can't believe it's making me cry! The episode with Daryl and Beth at the Moonshiner's house. I CRIED when Daryl did! What a terrible thing to say Beth! Telling him he'll be the last man standing? Sad.

Burn it down! Beth is a crazy little blonde. I did love when they used a stack of money to light the fire to torch the shack. I love when they use real locations too...you can't fake a fire like that.

So...who do we think is going to die? You know they're gonna take someone. *shudder*
